What is ISKCON's position about "Anu Gita"?

did any devotees read the "Anu Gita"? What do you think about it?

Extract from the book cover: "Most people (even in India) have not heard the name of Anu-Gita. This is so because, although Anu-Gita is an important part of the Mahabharata, no scholarly study of it, in a simple language, has so far been published. This gap will be filled by this pioneering book, which explains under what circumstances was the Gita taught by Lord Krishna to Arjuna, for the second time"

I would be curious to know how ISKCON officially considers this text.

    I have heard about Anu Gita 1 year ago. It was spoken after Mahabharata and krsna did not repeat Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.

    Vaisampayana said, "The son of Pritha (Arjuna), having recovered his own kingdom, joyously spent his time, without doing anything else, in the company of Krishna, his heart filled with delight, in that palace of celestial beauty. One day, those two listlessly proceeded to a particular part of the palace that looked, O king, like a veritable portion of Heaven. Themselves filled with delight, they were then surrounded by their relatives and attendents. Pandu's son, Arjuna, filled with joy in the company of Krishna, surveyed that delightful mansion, and then addressed his companion, saying, 'O--mighty-armed one, thy greatness became known to me upon the approach of the battle. O son of Devaki, thy form also, as the Lord of the universe, then became known to me! What thy holy self said unto me at that time, O Kesava, through affection, has all been forgotten by me, O chief of men, in consequence of the fickleness of my mind. Repeatedly, however, have I been curious on the subject of those truths. Thou again, O Madhava, wilt repair to Dwaraka soon.'

    energy, that foremost of speakers, embraced Phalguna and replied unto him as follows.

    'Vasudeva said, 'I made thee listen to truths that are regarded as mysteries. I imparted to thee truths that are eternal. Verily, I discoursed to thee on Religion in its true form and on all the eternal regions. It is exceedingly disagreeable to me to learn that thou didst not, from folly, receive what I imparted. The recollection of all that I told thee on that occasion will not come to me now. Without doubt, O son of Pandu, thou art destitute of faith and thy understanding is not good. It is impossible for me, O Dhananjaya, to repeat, in detail, all that I said on that occasion. That religion (about which I discoursed to thee then) is more than sufficient for understanding Brahma. I cannot discourse on it again in detail. I discoursed to thee on Supreme Brahma, having concentrated myself in Yoga. I shalt now, however, recite to thee an old history upon the same topic.

    recollect and instead he recited
    other Gita as Anugita or Garbha
    Gita..relating to King Janaka and
    Kashyapa Muni...so why Shri
    Krishna played this leela of
    forgetfulness though he is non

    Jai Simman Today's versions of the Mahabharata are like the public toilet. Everyone's loose motion has gone in there. That which came to explain the import of the shruti has now become a soap opera. It is better to rely on the Srimad Bhagavatam which came to set that right. Even Sripad Madhvacharya mentions in his Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya that the text of the former had become corrupt with so many falsities. And this was a good 800 years ago! What then since that point of time? It's gotten worse! People today rebuke the traditional approach of limiting scriptural access to just a few people. And the reverse of that - what has it created today? Anyone with a loose tongue is using the Mahabharata as a spitoon.

    Jai Simman Yes and besides, Krishna is not obligated to us to follow when He should or should not do something. There is no end to asking, "Why not this, why not that?" That which has been given must be properly be appreciated. For every occurrence called A, one can consider the alternative possibilities, B to Z. But the Mahabharata is not a fictional novel with an open-ended story line left to the whim of the reader. It's a presentation of what happened and how the Lord wanted things to happen for our own learning and correction, not the story's.

    CONCLUSION: THE ANU GITA PARVA OF MAHABHARATA TRANSLATION IS NOT TRANSLATED BY VAISHNAVA ACHARYAS. SO WE CAN'T TRUST THEM. BUT YES ANU GITA IS PART OF MAHABHARATA BUT IT IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS BHAGAVAD GITA.

    • Once Mahabharata was vaishnava scripture. now adulterated and thus has mixed up content.

      bhagavad Gita is still preserved by parampara system. Mahabharata was adulterated even till 12th century at advent of Sripad Madhvacarya because even he wrote Tatparya Nirnaya, commentary on Mahabharata rather than trust Mahabhrata texts authenticity.

      Still many verses are true in Mahabharat which are quoted by Vaishnava Acaryas in Sat Sandarbhas, Srila prabhupada's books, etc.

      The Vishnuvite thought had been vigorously reinforced by the compilation of the two great epics, viz., the Mahabharata a and the Ramayana which in their present forms contain a good deal of interpolated matter. The process which was in progress, of rewriting in the new Sanskrit language the contents of the older original books, furnished the opportunity, which was not missed by the opponents of the theistic thought, of consciously. or unconsciously importing into the Vishnuvite Narrative of the Epics a good deal of the thoughts and ideas of the other creeds. The Mahabharata was at once recognized by the Vishnuvite teacher as the text-book of their religion. The significance of the Teachings and Activities of Sree Krishna was, however, most fully and clearly brought out in Sreemad Bhagavat Purana which devoted itself exclusively to the task of finally separating the grain from the chaff and presenting the history of theism in its unadulterated and highest form of perfection embodied in the Teachings and Activities of Sree Krishna. Sreemad Bhagavatam is the gathering up and the final and complete statement of the theistic position successively revealed in course of the Ages.

      MAHABHARATA no longer is pure unedited itihasa.

      So, we cannot rely on present translations of Anu Gita present in Mahabharata.

        Actually Many Translators Translated It in Same say But We Need To Understand That Krishna Told The Same Bhagavad-Gita To Uddhava Just Before His Disappearance From The Material World Then Why He Said Before This, That I Can't Remember It ? Because It is Asura-Mohana-Lila Of Supreme Lord,He is Basis Of Impersonal Brahman Hence Why He Need To 'concentrate Himself in Yoga ?' 

        He Just Said That To Bewilder The Atheists of This Yuga..Just Like He Cried a bit after the Death of His Father in law :) And Some People Considered Himself As Normal Human..Only His Devotees Can Understand Him As He is,As He confirmed it in -

        Bg 18.55 — One can understand Me as I am, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, only by devotional service.

        How did Krishna forget the Bhagavad-gita, as he states in the Mahabharata ?

    This is the first time I hear about Anu Gita. Is it authorized by any of four Sampradaya?  Is it spoken by the Supreme Personality of God Head , Sri Krishna?

    So, how can you accept this  Anu Gita?  Can you accept any medicine without prescription of a  medical board certified doctor for your disease?

    Here is what  Srilla Prabhupad writes about Bhagavad-gita:

    Bhagavad-gītā is also known as Gītopaniṣad. It is the essence of Vedic knowledge and one of the most important Upaniṣads in Vedic literature. Of course there are many commentaries in English on the Bhagavad-gītā, and one may question the necessity for another one. This present edition can be explained in the following way. Recently an American lady asked me to recommend an English translation of Bhagavad-gītā. Of course in America there are so many editions of Bhagavad-gītā available in English, but as far as I have seen, not only in America but also in India, none of them can be strictly said to be authoritative because in almost every one of them the commentator has expressed his own opinions without touching the spirit of Bhagavad-gītā as it is.

     

    The spirit of Bhagavad-gītā is mentioned in Bhagavad-gītā itself. It is just like this: If we want to take a particular medicine, then we have to follow the directions written on the label. We cannot take the medicine according to our own whim or the direction of a friend. It must be taken according to the directions on the label or the directions given by a physician. Similarly, Bhagavad-gītā should be taken or accepted as it is directed by the speaker Himself. The speaker of Bhagavad-gītā is Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He is mentioned on every page of Bhagavad-gītā as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān. Of course the word bhagavān sometimes refers to any powerful person or any powerful demigod, and certainly here bhagavān designates Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa as a great personality, but at the same time we should know that Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as is confirmed by all great ācāryas (spiritual masters) like Śaṅkarācārya, Rāmānujācārya, Madhvācārya, Nimbārka Svāmī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and many other authorities of Vedic knowledge in India. The Lord Himself also establishes Himself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the Bhagavad-gītā, and He is accepted as such in the Brahma-saṁhitā and all the Purāṇas, especially the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, known as the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam). Therefore we should take Bhagavad-gītā as it is directed by the Personality of Godhead Himself.

    So, any unauthorized book can not be accepted by Mahva Gaudiya Vaishnav Society. For example, what happened about commentator of “Govinda Vashya”.  At that time the so called Pandits in Jaipur did not accept even Srimad Bhagavatam which is a natural commentary by Vyasadev  himself although it was supported by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself. However, when “Govinda Vashya was compiled by Baladev Bidya Bhusan empowered by Lord Govindji Himself, it was well accepted. So, how can we accept so called Anu Gita? So, How can you expect BBT of ISKCON can approve such unauthorized literature?

    • Yes Karunanidhi Das, the Anu Gita is spoken by Lord Krishna himself, that's why i was interested to know ISKCON's position on this book.

      Just because it contains phrases and discourses spoken by Lord Krishna, i thought it could be useful and interesting to approach this book and try to understand what Lord Krishna is telling us in this text.

      I agree with you that maybe what this text contains is too esoteric or too difficult to comprehend for simple devotees, maybe the teachings contained therein are too elevated and perhaps Srila Prabhupada knew that for us westerners, the "Bhagavad Gita as it is" was enough, and for this reason he never cited the Anu Gita.

        Thank you for sharing your thought. Yes, Srilla Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya simplified so many things for practicing Krishna Consciousness in this age, particularly for mundane wranglers. For example, Srilla Prabhupada recommended 16 rounds of chanting in stead of 64 which was a must for the disciple of Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Maharaj. Srilla Prabhupada made Budhi Yoga more simple and accessible to all walks of lives.

        Even, when Gaura Govinda Maharaj was there,He used to chastise the devotees who were reading out side scriptural books not written by Prabhupada. Also, if one simply read Prabhupada's books, he may not get enough time to read other books with no interests.One senior Vaishnav was telling in a Sunday class that one should read Bhagavad-gita 7 times, Srimad Bhagavatam 5 times, Caitanya Caritramrita  3 times in ones' life span. So, where is the tine for other literature?

    If Prabhupada felt Anu Gita is an important text to be read and understood, he would have surely mentioned it in his books. He said just read BG as it is, Srimad Bhagavatam and Caitanya Caritamrta and do your chanting and sadhana and you will go back to godhead.

    TRANSLATION
    Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.
    Prabhupada has seen and given us the truth, he has realised Krsna through his devotional service. Reading more books is not a crime but if it conflicts with your beliefs then your sadhana will be affected. We dont have the knowledge or intelligence to decide/comprehend which is authorised scripture. Prabhupad has done the work for us. Lets just follow him and serve him. This way we get the same knowledge that Arjuna got and our knowledge will be full. That knowledge is we are the soul and not the body and Sri Krsna is the supreme personality of Godhead. Once the knowledge is full, then what need is there to read other books.
