The four pillars are: mercy, truthfulness, austerity and cleanliness.
No Meat Eating: Mercy is destroyed by killing animals ; therefore no meat eating
No gambling: Truthfulness is destroyed by gambling.
No use of intoxicants. Austerity is broken by that
No illicit sex. Cleanliness is destroyed by illicit sex.
