When we travel by train for 2-3 days, we take bath in the train itself. There can be no compromise in cleanliness when it comes to chanting on tulasi beads. Tulasi is sacred and very dear to Krishna. I prefer to take bath before chanting no matter where I am.
Hare Krishna dear Devotees, please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
to wash hands, mouth, ears, eyes is enough for chanting Japa even in Tulasi Mala. Of course better to take full bath, but sometimes when we wake up, there is desire urgently to chant at least 8 rounds not destructing mind to other things even to taking bath.
and sometimes when we travel in the train for 2-3 days we do the same.
Please forgive me Gopal Prabhu, for putting opposite answer to Your answer.

Hare krishna Bhaktin Maral Mataji thanks for your beautiful answer it is very helpful.
That shows your devotion to Tulasi Devi. Indeed a very nice quality to have.
Chanting of the Holy Names of Krishna, there are no hard and fast rules. One can chant under any circumstances. Before shower, after shower, in the shower or on the toilet. One must never stop chanting/singing the Maha Mantra/Holy Name of the Lord.
Tulasi is a servant of Krishna. She is available to assist you in developing your attachment to Krishna. If it is ok for Krishna for you to chant before taking a shower, then it is ok for Tulasi Devi too.
Never leave Tulasi under any circumstances. Wear a kanti mala at all times. Have several in spare to give away and extra, if one breaks.
Tulasi Maharaniki Jai!!!
