Hare Krishna! According to Srila Prabhupada, Tulasi beads are the best for chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. In a lecture given on June 8, 1976, he stated, "Tulasi beads are very important for chanting Hare Krishna mantra. One should have the beads made out of Tulasi wood. It is essential."
While neem beads may be used as a substitute if Tulasi beads are not available, it is recommended to use Tulasi beads whenever possible. In a letter to one of his disciples, Srila Prabhupada wrote, "It is better to use Tulasi beads, but if not available, then use the neem beads. But you should not use any other type of beads."
Therefore, for beginner devotees, it is recommended to use Tulasi beads for chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. However, if Tulasi beads are not available, neem beads may be used as a substitute.
