I'm not considering it myself but im just curious what benefits do people get from sun worship, both material and spiritual? Can he lead you to liberation?

We can worship or pay obeisances to sun god as one of our vaisnava guru or as a pure devotee of the lord and should pray for the lord's mercy or bhakti from him, since he is a first disciple of lord krsna who recieved the knowledge of bhagvad gita directly from the lord as confirmed in the 4.1verse of BG.
Srila prabhupada explains in the purport of BG4.1 verse that:
"The sun is the king of the planets, and the sun-god (at present of the name Vivasvān) rules the sun planet, which is controlling all other planets by supplying heat and light. He is rotating under the order of Krishna, and Lord Krishna originally made Vivasvān His first disciple to understand the science of Bhagavad-gītā. The Gītā is not, therefore, a speculative treatise for the insignificant mundane scholar but is a standard book of knowledge coming down from time immemorial."
Hare Krsna.
Yours servant.

we worship Surya Narayan for example by doing Surya Namaskar.
Respecting Sun gives health which is needed needed in our devotional life.
For example, waking up and do spiritual practice in Brahma Muhurta is itself a great respect to Surya Dev.
To eat in proper time proper foods is itself a respect to Him.
To sleep on time and to live according to His will is itself is a great respect to Him.
There is no need for other special rituals. He is pleased when we worship His beloved Lord Krishna - Surya Narayana.
Benefits - life in the mode of goodness, good health, good qualities, charitable personality...
