According to Vedic scriptures and the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, a spiritual desire that arises from a material desire is seen by Krishna as a positive step towards spiritual progress. Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and He is always eager to help sincere souls who are seeking to connect with Him.
In the Bhagavad-gita (7.16), Krishna says, "O best among the Bharatas [Arjuna], four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me—the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute." This verse indicates that even if our initial motivation for approaching Krishna is material in nature, such as a desire for wealth or relief from distress, it can still lead us to the path of devotional service.
Krishna is supremely compassionate and understanding. He appreciates our sincere efforts to come closer to Him, even if we may have some material desires initially. As we progress in our spiritual journey and engage in devotional practices, Krishna gradually purifies our hearts and helps us transcend our material desires.
To illustrate this, let me share a couple of analogies:
The Swan and Milk: Just as a swan can extract the milk from a mixture of milk and water and reject the water, similarly, when we engage in Krishna consciousness, we can gradually extract the spiritual essence from our material desires and leave behind the material contamination.
The Pious Man and Child: In the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, it is explained that a pious man never gives up a child simply because the child sometimes misbehaves. Similarly, Krishna, as our loving father, understands that we may have material desires due to our past conditioning. As long as we sincerely strive to follow the process of devotional service and rectify our mistakes, Krishna forgives us and continues to guide us towards spiritual perfection.
In conclusion, Krishna appreciates our sincere efforts to connect with Him, even if our initial desires are material in nature. As we progress in devotional service, Krishna purifies our hearts and helps us transcend our material desires. It is important to continue engaging in devotional practices, seek the association of devotees, and follow the instructions of the spiritual master to gradually purify our consciousness and develop a deep, loving relationship with Krishna.
Material desires are those that arise from the false identification with the body and mind, and that seek to satisfy one's personal senses or ego. Spiritual desires are those that arise from the true identification with the soul, and that seek to serve and please Krishna.
