My father told me that "You're not supposed to listen to songs other than those by Vaishnava Acharyas". Not talking about Bollywood/Western music but any other devotional song that describes the Lord. (from an artist other than one in Gaudiya sampradaya)
I believe the Lord is all good, all bliss and whatever music/poetry describes him is essentially flawless.
So what is the reason behind this? Any quotes from acharyas regarding this if possible? Please clear this doubt.

I didn't expect the discussion to go in such a wrong direction. All I had was a honest query and most of it was answered already. Also Suhas prabhu, thank you for your answer. I appreciate it.
Now let us not indulge in baseless criticism or arguments. We're all devotees here, a family actually, and it does not behoove us to act this way. We have some standards to set for everyone else. I apologize that this discussion started by me has caused such commotion. Let us simply offer our obeisances to Guru and Krishna and love each other, help each other advance. As Bhakti Tirtha Maharaj said "We've been blessed by the best, now we must help each other pass the test." If we fall apart, we cannot save others too. So let this discussion be over now. Gayatri ji the question is not about keeping faith in guru. All of you are pointing fingers at others saying that ohh these ppl are making money so they are impure. Dont listen to them. Sant Tukaram was a householder had wife and 3 kids. He too was money making and was very rich but he proved to be the greatest devotee of all. Similar was Mira bai but not the same family life as Tukaram. BOTH OF THEM WENT ALIVE WITH THEIR BODIES TO GODHEAD. Not one or two but atleast a dozen are exposed on cam. What is the guarantee that the vaishnav acharya you are following is pure? BASICALLY PPL ARE STILL BLINDLY BELIVING ONLY ON OUTWARD SAFFRON DRESS.
Pls get your facts right prabhu. Sant Tukaram running after money!!! What could be more preposterous. He was from a very rich family, but he lived in penury all his life.
Mirabai was a princess, married to a prince. She lived the life of a sadhvi in a palace, then left the palace to stay in Vrindavan and later, in Dwarka.

Just to tell you - the person you are referring to again and again - Asaram bapu - has he written any bhajan? Then where is the question of singing his bhajans?
The question was whether to hear vaishnav songs only or bhajans from outside. We are referring to proven saints like Mirabai and Tulsidas, who have written doha/chaupai/bhajans, you are referring to Asaram. Each to his level.
People who are exposed - they are not from any parampara. They are self styled Godmen - they are sure to fall. There are some basics of devotion one has to know before one gets on a forum and starts advising "neophytes". For that matter, are you in parampara? Can you tell about yourself - which temple you are attached to - who is your shiksha guru? What is your sadhana level? From your answers it is evident - still I want you to spell out in this forum for people to decide whether they want to give weightage to your words or not.

There is a big difference between making money and running after money. Google and see. You donot even know T OF Tukaram maharaja life. He ran a huge grocery godown so clearly he didnot have to run anywhere. People themselves came to him for obvious reasons.

this is the reason why i keep away from this guru trap. I didnot want to dig this out but your careless remarks forced me into this.a neophyte is much better than a self proclaimed councellor who doesnt even apologize for her mistakes. I dont agree with prabhupada views that women are less intelligent but first gayatri and now you are proving him correct. Those who blatantly say that others fell should first check if their own base is strong or not. Now devotees will think whether to give weightage to your words or not.
yes that's right , just because one or two so called gurus came fake, you won't lose faith in your gurus. basically if you have a cheating mentality you'll get attracted to a cheating guru, but if you're sincere you'll get attracted to a genuine guru. (-srila prabhupad)
Das anu das prabhu aasaram bapu and several others had millions and millions of followers world wide. Do all those millions have cheating mentality??
as you rightly said it's kaliyuga majority of people have it yes.
