Hare Krishna! I keep seeing devotees wearing tilak on their forehead. Could you please let me know what is teh significance of wearing that and is it necessasry for everyone to do so. Please help me.

Thank you prabhuji, for such a wonderful explanation. But how does one wear it on forehead? in kerala, I have seen people wearing chandan, but thats a simple straight line on ur forehead. How does one wear this tilak? BY ur explanation, I can understand that it is important for all krishna devotees to wear. but I have also seen that not all people wear it. I had been to Iskcon many times and I have witnessed this. Please correct me if i am wrong.
