Bad karma wil go only by good karma. We will be on the path of good karma only when we connect with God.
Understanding yourself means to understand that we are soul, part and parcel of super soul, that we are subservient to the Supreme. To understand that we have limited senses, God has unlimited senses. How can we understand God when we dont understand ourselves or the functioning of our body also.
To stay connected with God and to understand God, it is important to purify our senses. This is possible by chanting. Basically, one has to do the ABCD of devotion - Association, Books, Chanting and Diet - the rest will follow.
Mind that is uncontrolled is the biggest enemy. It will always teach us to go away from God, because it knows that once we start on this path, we will control the mind.

Pronunciation is similar to (huhDEE) or (huhDAY) with emphasis on the second syllable.
In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna tells us that "to those who are constantly engaged in serving me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to me." By chanting with love we can serve Krishna.
As for understanding the self, when you know God (Krishna), you will know everything, what to speak of the self...

Regarding all things regarding understanding/enlightenment. Further, Hi's (strenth/Swagger) & ability to finesse attract & persuade is incomparable. Hence worshipping Via the Raw is methodical & far less fruitful/meaningful than dedicating a comparable amount of time grounding washing lifting and redirecting the energies of the cosmos towards the ends of enhancing personal name fame strength and reputation. The good News is, that all yogic processes which are engaged-in to clean purify & liberate us for say, a tawist practice session can all be easily directed /redirected to include Krishna as the primary focus of attention. The same is true regarding all yogas, Krishna can be substituted for any one or any other object without the practitioner suffering any loss or diminishin on the contrary I'm sure. Energies I suppose could be considered as the grade schoolers, Yin-Yang, the five Chis)
