Can anyone help me understand this ? Why Prabhupada said " Religion without philosophy is sentiment, or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation " ?
People speculate false philosophy in name of religion also. is it not mental speculation ?
If one is rendering loving devotion to krishna but not learning sastras is it sentiment ? I am not talking about sahajiyas here.
I am confussed. Please help. I am unable to make out the inner meaning.

Mental speculation is that present scientists say that this universe appeared because of big ban or something like that. Other mental concoction is Darvin who told that human beings appeared from monkeys. And other is that scientists say that there is no life in other planets...
these are all mental speculations. There are three ways of getting knowledge:
Pratyaksha
Anuman
and Shabdha.
Pratyaksha means when one get knowledge using material senses. For example, tasting honey we learn that it is sweet...
Anuman means when one uses logic. For example, i went to the Temple, and did not come on time to home. My parents will now start to think why it is so. Then they may come to different conclusions: if she left the Temple on time but did not reach home she might be struck on the way. Or she might be gone to other Mataji's home. In this way they use logic. But in the reality the truth might be completely different thing (that i might be still at the Temple.)

But Shabdha means to get knowledge from high intelligence which is from Krishna through Paramapara.
By hearing the authoritative source.
So philosophy of present day scientists is based on anuman. Using logic they want to know the truth. It is mental speculation.

And religion without the knowledge of Tattva is simple sentiment. If we do not know who is Krishna, how great He is, which are His energies, what is our position according to Him, what is this material world and what is spiritual then our service will be out of simple sentiments. And it won't last for a long time.
When we have desire we will serve but when we do not have desire we won't serve.
But on the other hand that who knows tattva, who knows that he is soul and this body is material ...then even when time will come he will loose his faith or desire to serve this knowledge will keep him in the service. Because he knows that it is the truth. It is the truth that i am soul and Krishna is God and my eternal position is to be His servant.
You told that You are not talking about sahajiyas. But it is true without knowledge at least basic knowledge that " Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and i am His eternal servant" one is sahajiya. Also sahsyiya is that who does not follow 4 regulative principles and does not chant minimum 16 rounds but claims to be a Gopi of Krishna. But that who follows 4 regulative principles and chants minimum 16 rounds or at least vowed rounds regularly and knows that Krishna is God then it is not a sahajiya. Although he has not much knowledge.
