When we have a birthday we celebrate this with foodstuff and music (prasadam and kirtan), so why we need to fast until sunset on the day of Rama Navami.

Dandvat pranam.
Birthdays are celebrated with feasts, i agree. We feast after the fast. We fast on days of appearance of the Lord, so that we have time for more sadhana, reading, chanting, listening to lectures, meditating on the qualities and lessons from the pastimes of the lord in that form.
Once we are done with fasting, we then indulge in feasting.
Some temples, the fast is till noon on Ram Navami.
