In Sri Caitanya-bhagavata Madhya-khanda 23.76-68, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally instructed
all the people of Navadvipa to chant: hare krsna hare krsna, krsna krsna, hare hare; hare rama hare rama, rama rama, hare hare.
prabhu bole,"kahilan ei mahamantra; iha japa giya sabe koriya nirbandha."
The Lord said, "Please hear this Hare Krishna Maha-mantra. Everyone please chant this Maha-mantra daily in 'nirbhandha' (multiples of sixty-four (64) rounds) or constantly."

sarva-skana bolo' ithe vidhi nahi ara.
The Lord continued, "By chanting in this way one will achieve all perfection in one's life. Please keep on chanting constantly because there is no consideration of any rules and regulations for this chanting process."
In Sri Caitanya-bhagavata Adi-khanda 14.140, Lord Caitanya instructed Tapana Misra:
ratri-dina nama laya khaite suite; tanhara inahima vede mahi pare dite.
"The Vedas are unable to fully describe the glories of one who chants the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra day and night, even while eating and sleeping."

Yoga means to connect ourself again with God, or Krishna. This practice of yoga, always thinking of Krishna, is very easily accomplished by chanting Hare Krishna maha-mantra, if you chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. A devotee is not afraid of going to hell if he has the opportunity to hear the glories of the Lord constantly. The dog is also sleeping on the side of a street without any difficulty and the king is sleeping on the palace, very nice apartment. A Krishna conscious person, he’s also sleeping. But there are different grades. The Krishna conscious person while sleeping, is chanting Hare Krishna. This can be done. If you practice this Hare Krishna, even in sleeping you’ll chant Hare Krishna.
