Hare Krsna Prabhuji,
PAMHO.
What I know is - Saligrama sila comes from Gandaki river. Each sila has a different shape and sometimes even golden strands in it. Depending on the marks on the sila, it is determined whether the sila is Nrisimha Saligram sila or Damodar Saligram Sila or any other Saligram sila.
We cannot buy the sila. Someone has to gift us and our diksha guru has to authorise us to serve Him. No installation/ pran pratishtha is required. The only seva is bathing with water, offering tulsi leaf dipped in chandan. Place on altar and do regular aratis and bhoga offerings.
I have never heard of these divine silas to be fossil of some extinct species.
Haribol,
Your servant,
