missing bead on japa mala

I received a japa mala from a brahmachari that only has 107 regular beads and 1 large one, and it is my understanding that there are suppose to be 108 regular beads with 1 large bead. does this mean that I need to get a new mala?
I feel to follow traditions that this is what i must do.

Hare Krsna!

    Hare Krishna,

Remember to chant an extra time each round and that will make it 108.

If you are going to change the mala, replacing with Tulasi mala (assuming you are going to treat her with respect) will help you progress nicely. I have quoted Namacharya Haridas Takore in one of the other threads.
