Milk other than cow milk?

Hare Krishna dear devotees, accept my humble obeisances AGTSP!

Recently I have been to the market and I found a food product which contains cow\buffalo milk, so I was wondering are we suppose to consume those products? Normally ofcourse I take no other milk except cow's but can we consume any other milk other than cow milk?

Thank you

  • hare krishna mataji. please listen to a CD cow thearapy which contains lecture delivered by uttam gaurishankarji in iskcon nasik temple.also read his book 'apne doctor swayam bane'. it rightly explains you why to drink only cows milk and that too only indegenous breed cows and no other cow. this milk has become very rare and im sure we dont get it in the market. only if there are goshalas then we can get it. the milk in the market comes from  foreign breeds which is now termed as white poison even by european scientists who actuallly led this white revolution.

  • Milk is highly adulterated in India,as well as ghee: devotees were cooking with fake ghee, containing high percentage of cow's fat some time ago!

So the solution is that devotees go back to farming and cow protection!!!

Also it is stated in BG 3.40 (purport)

A human being who identifies this body made of three elements with his self, who considers the by-products of the body to be his kinsmen, who considers the land of birth worshipable, and who goes to the place of pilgrimage simply to take a bath rather than meet men of transcendental knowledge there, is to be considered like an ass or a cow.

There cow is considered a living entity who is very much fallen and fool! But also we know that we'r supposed to worship cow and she is like our mother, then why is the condition soul with less knowledge of the self is compared to a cow?

    Hare Krsna,

His divine grace, A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has given numerous examples of the importance of cow protection and cow's milk. Below are some important quotes that show the importance of cows.

"The protection of cows maintains the most miraculous form of food, i.e., milk for maintaining the finer tissues of the brain for understanding higher aims of life.

Human society needs only sufficient grain and sufficient cows to solve its economic problems. All other things but these two are artificial necessities created by man to kill his valuable life at the human level and waste his

time in things which are not needed. Lord Krsna, as the teacher of human society, personally showed by His acts that the mercantile community, or the vaisyas, should herd cows and bulls and thus give protection to the valuable animals.

According to smrti regulation, the cow is the mother and the bull the father of the human being. The cow is the mother because just as one sucks the breast of one's mother, human society takes cow's milk. Similarly, the bull is the father of human society because the father earns for the children just as the bull tills the ground to produce food grains."

"Panca-gavya, the five products received from the cow, namely milk, yogurt, ghee, cow dung and cow urine, are required in all ritualistic ceremonies performed according to the Vedic directions. Cow urine and cow dung are uncontaminated, and since even the urine and dung of a cow are important, we can just imagine how important this animal is for human civilization. Therefore the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, directly advocates go-raksya, the protection of cows."

"Civilized men who follow the system of varnasrama, especially those of the vaisya class, who engage in agriculture and trade, must give protection to the cows. Unfortunately, because people in Kali-yuga are mandah, all bad, and sumanda-matayah, misled by false conceptions of life, they are killing cows in the thousands. Therefore they are unfortunate in spiritual consciousness, and nature disturbs them in so many ways, especially through incurable diseases like cancer and through frequent wars and among nations. As long as human society continues to allow cows to be regularly killed in slaughterhouses, there cannot be any question of peace and prosperity."

"Jamadagni was more powerful than Kartaviryarjuna because of performing the agnihotra-yajna with clarified butter received from the kamadhenu. Not everyone can be expected to possess such a cow. Nonetheless, an ordinary man may possess an ordinary cow, give protection to this animal, take sufficient milk from it, and engage the milk to produce butter and clarified ghee, especially for performing the agnihotra-yajna. This is possible for everyone."

"Thus we find that in Bhagavad-gita Lord Krsna advises go-raksya, the protection of cows. This is essential because if cows are cared for properly they will surely supply sufficient milk. We have practical experience in America that in our various Krsna Conscious farms we are giving proper protection to the cows and receiving more than enough milk. In other farms the cows do not deliver as much milk as in our farms; because our cows know very well that we are not going to kill them, they are happy, and they give ample milk. Therefore this instruction given by Lord Krsna--go-raksya--is extremely meaningful. The whole world must learn from Krsna how to live happily without scarcity simply by producing food grains (annad bhavanti bhutani) and giving protection to the cows (go-raksya). Krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam vaisya-karma svabhavajam. Those who belong to the third level of human society, namely the mercantile people, must keep land for producing food grains and giving protection to cows. This is the injunction of Bhagavad-gita. In the matter of protecting the cows, the meat-eaters will protest, but in answer to them we may say that since Krsna gives stress to cow protection, those who are inclined to eat meat may eat the flesh of unimportant animals like hogs, dogs, goats and sheep, but they should not touch the life of the cows, for this is destructive to the spiritual advancement of human society."

      Hare Krishna dear devotees,

thankyou all very much for replying! It's of great help.

But I still have a question, as said by Maral mataji buffalo milk is not in the mode of goodness, so can we offer this food to Krishna which is not in the mode of goodness? And also when buffalo milk is in the mode of passion or ignorence, why are we to consume it? Won't it affect our consciousness like other food in the mode of passion/ignorence?

Buffalo milk is not in the mode of ignorance but its very heavy to digest. Even today in our families, small children are not fed with milk from a buffalo as it will make them slightly inactive and the reason being that it being heavy is hard to digest, all the energy goes in the process of digestion and will make them very sleepy all day long. We also have this kind of experience when we over eat in some feast right.

milk never can be in full ignorance dear Priya Mataji. Even buffalo Mother's milk is her blood out of love for her child turns into milk. But bad side is buffaloes perspire not with skin but their perspiration enters into the their milk, because of that it is not as good as cows'.

But buffalo milk can be drunken by those who do very hard works like in the factories...

As i heard goat milk and camel milk also are ok for offering but not sheep milk.

Goat milk is good for those who have kapha dosha and camel milk for those who have bad digestion. So in this way Srila Prabhupada told us not to eat and drink meat, onion, garlic, coffee, tea, eggs but he did not tell us not to drink other milk.

But in Orissa it is forbidden to keep buffaloes. Long time ago king of that province made law that only cow milk should be offered to Lord Jaganatha.

buffalo milk OK but not recommended. However, one should be careful about milk other than these two. We can not offer goat milk or sheep milk to Lord.
