Matter and anti matter

One of the most significant breakthroughs in modern science has been the discovery of antimatter. Even though this discovery was made in 1959, it still remains now almost five decades later one of the greatest achievements of modern science. Of course the existence of antimatter is nothing new to those who are learned in the ancient Vedic science. The existence of both matter and antimatter is clearly described in the 5,000 years old Bhagavad-gita by Lord Krishna as follows:

sad asac caham Arjuna

"O Arjuna, both antimatter and matter are in Me."
Bhagavad-gita 9.19

So what is matter? And what is antimatter? Matter is broken down into eight gross and subtle material elements described in the Bhagavad-gita as follows:

bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh
kham mano buddhir eva ca
ahankara itiyam me
bhinna prakrtir astadha

"Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego -- all together these eight constitute My separated material energies."
Bhagavad-gita 7.4

Antimatter consists of innumerable antimaterial particles. What is the nature of those antimaterial particles? They are also described in the Bhagavad-gita.

na jayate mriyate va kadacin
nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah
ajo nityah sasvato 'yam purano
na hanyate hanyamane sarire

"The antimaterial particle, which is the vital force, is never born or created. It exists eternally. It has neither birth dates nor death dates. It is neither repeatedly created nor repeatedly destroyed. It is eternally existing, and therefore it is the oldest of the old, and yet it is always fresh and new. Although the material particle is annihilated, the antimaterial particle is never affected." Bhagavad-gita 2.20

So antimatter is the stuff of which we, the living entities, are made. Each one us is an antimaterial particle, the atomic soul. At the present moment in that material world we, the antimaterial particles, are foolishly misidentifying ourselves with matter. Antimatter is eternal, full of bliss, and full of knowledge, while matter is temporary, full of ignorance and misery. To misidentify ourselves with matter is the biggest mistake we can ever make. To do so completely ruins our ability to taste the unlimited happiness, which is our constitutional birthright and to see things as they are. In its natural state the antimaterial particle is a liberated being. It is only in an unnatural state that it is covered by matter.

My spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, explains, "The perfection of science will occur when it is possible for the material scientists to know the qualities of the antimaterial particle and liberate it from the association of nonpermanent, material particles. Such liberation would mark the culmination of scientific progress."

Now that science has discovered antimatter, we sincerely hope that it will progress further now to perfect knowledge of matter, antimatter, and liberation.

  • Hare Krishna to all!

As we all agree that Bhagavad Gita is the supreme TRUTH, all other concepts are changing. Scientists are playing with pebbles in the shore of the ocean of knowledge only. My confusion is in relating 'antimatter' with 'soul' and/or with mind. The referred verses clearly says 'soul' and 'spirit' are from Krishna and which are opposite the matter i.e, soul /spirit is not originated from matter or animatter.

Bg 2.20 — For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.

Bg 9.19 — O Arjuna, I give heat, and I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality, and I am also death personified. Both spirit and matter are in Me.

Let's have a look at the  following facts:

Antimatter: Antimatter was first predicted in 1928 by English physicist Paul Dirac and received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933. What is antimatter? ----the antimatter is just like matter with opposite charges. What is the origin of antimatter?----During cooling down than expanding the universe, particles of both matter and antimatter were produced in equal amounts. So, the antimatter is neither soul nor spirit.

Krishna says, " Both spirit and matter are in Me.". However, the idea I have acquired from various scriptures is that our soul is beyond the concept of matter ( also of antimatter). No one knows the composition of soul (?). Jivatma is a miniscule part of Paramatma or Krishna. If souls are antimatter then Krishna is antimatter too, am I right? Then does it make complete sense? Please explain.

I would like to read more about the relation between antimatter and soul. I would appreciate if anyone can provide me refereces. Please help me eliminate my confusion.

    Your servant,

    Amal

  • Hare Krishna to all for a wonderful discussion regarding 'matter' and 'antimatter'.  Would you please define the difference between 'anti-matter' and 'soul'? If antimaters consists of particles then it sounds like 'quasi' particles. According to modern scinece antimatter is composed of antiparticles which have the same mass as the particles of ordinary matter but have opposite charge. So, scientific definition doesn't support what we understand from the scritptures. May be 'subtle body' composed of antimatter. However, I don't understand how to relate mind with antimatter becuase mind can't be perceived as something like 'matter' or 'antimatter'.  Then mind needs to have a certain amount of mass.

I would like to get your clarifications regarding this subject. Thank you all for such an important topic.

    Hare Krishna!
