Hare Krishna fellow devotees,
I have noticed some mantras being chanted before devotees start reading the Bhagad Gita, Srimad Bhagavadam etc.
I wanted to know the reference to these mantras.
I am aware of "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya". I am not referring to that, these are some other mantras.
Would be obliged if someone could point them to me.
Hari Bol!

Hare Krsna Prabhuji,
PAMHO.
Mantras to be chanted before Srimad Bhagawatam reading:
Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevayah - 3 times
then Narayanam Namaskrityam Naran Chaiva Narottamam, Devim Saraswatim Vyasam Tato Jayam Udirayet. Nashta Prayeshwa Abhadresu Nityam Bhagwat Sevaya, Bhagwati Uttama Shloke Bhaktir Bhavati Naishthikim.
The guru will also chant - Mukam Karoti Vacalam, Pangum Langayate Girim, Yat Kripa Tam Aham Vande, Shri Gurun Deena Taranam, Paramananda Madhavam, Shri Chaitanya Isvaram, Hari Om Tat Sat.
For Bhagawad Gita - the invocation prayers beginning from Om Agyana Timirandhasya... till Mahamantra (in italised) in the Introduction is said before reading.
All other books do not require any invocation prayers as a rule. However, one may pray to guru and Srila Prabhupada before reading. One may say the same invocation prayers as that of Gita before reading.
Haribol,
Your servant,
Rashmi
Very Nice Rashmi!
as I read your response I did some search and quickly learned the two verses are from SB itself .. :)
So Glad Gaitry posted this question - and you answered - as I was not diligent at paying attention to these verses at the beginning.. so thanks to both of you for helping me get better at paying my obeisances!
Here is some reference -
Canto 1, Chapter 2 Text 4
narayanam namaskrtya
naram caiva narottamam
devim sarasvatim vyasam
tato jayam udirayet
Translation:
Before reciting this Srimad-Bhagavatam, which is the very means of conquest, one should offer respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead, Narayana, unto Nara-narayana Rsi, the supermost human being, unto mother Sarasvati, the goddess of learning, and unto Srila Vyasadeva, the author.
Canto 1, Chapter 2 Text 18
nasta-prayesv abhadresu
nityam bhagavata-sevaya
bhagavaty uttama-sloke
bhaktir bhavati naisthiki
Translation:
By regular attendance in classes on the Bhagavatam and by rendering of service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact.
Prabhupada Ki JAI! Prabhu NItyananda KI JAI! All glories to all devotees!
haribol!
Hare Krsna,
My obeisances to all devotees, guru and gauranga.
To be honest mataji, just chanting the maha mantra 3 times or even once would be sufficient before reading Bhagavad Gita.
However, if you want to chant more mantras then you can recite
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya - 3 times
Srī Guru Praṇāma
oṁ ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayā
cakṣur unmīlitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ - once
usually before chanting the maha mantra, a devotee chants the panca tatva mantra to get the blessing of gauranga and nitai prabhu who are more merciful than krsna himself. So taking their blessing is paramount.
Pañca-tattva Mahā-mantra
(jaya) śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu nityānanda
śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda - once
Maha Mantra
Hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare - 3 times
This is my understanding.
Srila prabhupada ki jai..
Hare krsna
