mantRa 7 of mAnDUkya Upanishad

Does the words - 'prapanchopasamam' and 'advaitam' - in mantRa no. 7 of the mAnDUkya Upanishad indicate that the entire visible and invisible universes are to be sublimated as 'BhagavAn' and 'HE' is 'THAT' without a second? Kindly throw light on the same.

  • The material mind manifests in three states of consciousness — wakefulness, sleep and deep sleep — which are products of the three modes of nature. The state of soul or  Atma is transcendental state of consciousness, and its sometimes called ''turiya'' or fourth.  (Visva, Taijasa, Prajna and Turiya)

SB 11.28.20The material mind manifests in three phases of consciousness — wakefulness, sleep and deep sleep — which are products of the three modes of nature. The mind further appears in three different roles — the perceiver, the perceived and the regulator of perception. Thus the mind is manifested variously throughout these threefold designations. But it is the fourth factor, existing separately from all this, that alone constitutes the Absolute Truth.

That 7th mantra of Mandukya Upanishad talks about that fourth state of consciousness which is advaita (non-dual) and

prapanchopasama (prapancha-world and upasana-sitting near, worship, adoration), which means that is near this material world or material consciousness.

    • Hare Krishna.

Thanks Dean Prabhu Ji for the clarification.

As you rightly pointed out - 'fourth state of consciousness which is advaita'. i.e 'turiyam' includes every bit of visible and invisble universes. i.e BhagavAn is in and through the 3 states - waking, dreaming and deep sleep. And understanding that is by 'prapanchopasamam' - that is the 3 prapanchas of the 3 paadaas are sublimated in 'Turiiyam' and confirming that 'BhagavAn KrishNa' alone 'IS'. This is realised by sitting near, worship and adoration.
