I want to ask that my family doesn't follow strict Vaishnavism diet ...there is a intake of onion garlic (in small amount ) is there ...but we love krishna ..from childhood bhajan kirtan dance pulled me towards him ..and now bhagwat geeta is giving me something that I felt missing in my life and I want to do mala jap ..could I use tulsi mala for it ?  Will it be offence if I eat onion ?

  • Here is my take on it. Would a pure devotee deny you his or her association just because you eat onion? Of course not. Neither would Krishna or Tulsi, so if you find it appropriate, it is ok to chant on Tulsi for you as long as you respect her, which is clear that you do. If you want, however you can purchase other type of beads online, and Krishna will Spiritualize those as well for you. Here is a link to a Krishna Culture store where you can buy a number of different types of beads. But for Hare Krishna chanting I still highly recommend Tulsi for devotees. Here is the link, there are different types of beads here:

God Bless you Mataji. Pray to Krishna and chant, and see what He wants best for you. Hare Krishna.

    Hare Krsna Mataji,

    PAMHO.

CHanting on Tulsi beads is avoidable until one becomes firmed up. Till then, one can chant on neem beads. Tulsi beads is after initiation ideally.

Chanting is important - how you do is secondary. Please chant - on beads, on fingers, on excel - whatever works. Chant.

Doesnt matter family doesnt follow strict vaishnavism. Chant. No rules to chanting - can be done at any time - whether taken bath or not, indoors or outdoors, sitting, walking, standing. Ideally not sleeping unless there is a health issue. All days of the month - chanting has to be done.

PLease start with 4 rounds and gradually increase to 16. 4 rounds will take half an hour of your time. You could do it all at once or split the rounds and do. Please suit your convenience.

    Hairbol,

  • It's not an offence to chant on Tulsi just because you eat onion and garlic, as long as you chant with love and respect the regulation. By that I mean you would have to wash out your mouth after eating the onion, by brushing your teeth, and try not to touch Tulsi with hands that aren't washed after eating the onion, that would help too. I have met many advanced devotees going through hardship in their life who were sometimes forced to eat onions and sometimes even meat, but this does not exclude us from the love of Tulsi and Krishna. As long as you are reciprocating the love back with respect and Bhakti, you are doing all right, so my honsest advice to you is to not restrict yourself from wearing and chanting on Tulsi, as your family loves Krishna but has this small onion eating thing, but engross yourself fully in Krishna Consciousness like the other devotees, and possibly, when able, the onion eating will go away too. Of course, you could use another type of mala if you want, there are many different types, but I don't want you to feel isolated just because you eat onions,so I recommend you chant on Tulsi beads. I have personally given away Tulsi beads to a number of westerners who weren't ready to follow the regulative principles just so they could start chanting and get there. When someone has an interest in Krishna don't restrict them, but allow for spontaneous devotional service. That is my opinion. Hare Krishna.

    • Thankyou prabhu ji ...i asked this because I love tulsi devi ..I don't want to disrespect her in any way and moreover I am dependent on others for meal  preparation as suffering from body weakness and neem beads are also not available in market ....thankyou ...

    Hare Krishna dandvats Mataji,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Yes, reading of Bhagawad Gita and chanting can be done always in all circumstances. Chanting can be on an ordinary Mala as for now you are not been able to follow the 4 regulative principles so chanting on Tulasi Mala would be an offence. We usually chant the Hare Krishna  Maha Mantra in early morning hours at least 16 rounds, you can start with one and can try to increase at least one round each month till you reach the prescribed minimum of 16 rounds daily morning, can chant extra rounds for practice during the day when you can get some time. Chant in front of Srimati Tulasi Maharani to have better results. For any further information / clarification can email me at rsharma_66@yahoo.com, thanks, take care, Hare Krishna.
