Hare Krishna,
Many times Prabhupada said that one should make his home a temple.
What are the characteristics of that temple? What should be the activities in that temple?

please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Pabhupada!
A Temple means a home of Krishna God.
So when there is Krishna's Deity at our home and when we render service t o Him that is called as a Temple.
When Deity comes we should make sure that He is pleased with food, cleanliness, dresses, kirtans, ...everything. Whatever we have we offer to the Deity. Also plant a Tulasi and offer Her to the Deity.
Husband goes out and earns money, wife stays back at home and takes care of a house cleaning, washing, and of kids Devotees of the Lord...after offering to the Deity they should invite guests and feed them Prasadam in this way showing example to kids of how charitable one should be.
Because in the society grihasthas should consider not only their kids as their kids but also Sannyasis, brahmacharis and vanaprasthas. In this way they have to take care of them also.

The example, for all what was said:
There is one family in our country. Father Mother two sisters and one brother. They have enough big Gaura Nitay Deities and full big room is for Them. It is as like a real Temple hall. So there they grow Tulasi, keep Bhagavatam, musical instruments. Every morning parents wake up and take bath then children. Then father wears pujari cloth and wakes up the Deities as per Temple standards. Then starts to do puja, children and mother sing Mangala Arati and other prayers. Then Tulasi puja. Then they sit together and chant for 1-2 hours. Then mother goes to cook,
Again little kirtan then they sit together again and father reads Bhagavatam. Then little discussion. Mother offers food to the Lord ...then after Bhagavatam they honor Prasadam and Father goes to his job as a Teacher at school.
Mother stays back and takes care of fields they have gardens where they grow vegetables and fruits. Daughters completed school because of that they also stay at home and take care of the house. Brother goes to school.
Almost in two days once they invite guests and feed them with Prasadam. Also they organize bhakti vriksha groups in that village. Mostly two sisters are expert in that.
So a small village already became Krishna Conscious.
