"maha" means "great" and "prasadam" means "mercy". In this way the food which is eaten by Lord directly called as Maha Prasadam - great Mercy.

When it is eaten by sages then if we honor them then it is called as Maha Maha Prasadam.

Once at lunch time Krishna was offered many cooked items from each Devotees of Vrindavan. When He got the sweet cooked by Srimati Radharani He put into His mouse and made His face look sour then everybody thought that Srimati Radharani cooked something very distaste, then Krishna took it out from His mouth and throe to the plate of Gopa Kumar His beloved Friend. In this way He wanted to give to His Friend the best mercy directly out from His own mouse.

    Your servant,

    • why is the mahaprasadam different from prasadam - both are supposed to have been tasted by Krishna. what do u mean by maha, maha prasadam? how can one improve upon perfection. Perfection cannot be graded into perfect, more perfect and most perfect. perfect is perfect.

        my humble obeisances!

It is like saying 1000 Names of perfect Vishnu equals to one Name of perfect Rama and 3 perfect Names of Rama equals to 1 Name of Krishna. In this way even in perfect there is perfect.

Prahlada Maharaja is aperfect Devotee but even though he sends Narada Muni to some one else saying that there are Devotees who are more perfect.

Prasadam is perfect but that part which was directly put in the plate of Deities and was glanced by the direct glance of Krishna is better than that which was not done so. But it does not mean that Krishna did not see other part of offering. No. He sees directly all bhoga offered and eats them all but that small part, again, is the best.

And most times Devotees distribute it separately from main Prasadam. Because as we know not all people eat everything on their plate and if we mix Maha Prasadam with other Prasadam they may throe Maha Prasadam which is offensive. But tasting just a small portion of Maha Prasadam one will be able to honor it in a very good consciousness.

        Your servant,

        • thanks for your lucid explanation mataji.

  • Mahaprasadam is also the prasadam directly from the Deity's plate

  • Hare Krsna, very good question.

I got this answer last year when I was in Puri Jagannath. Once Narad Muni after honoring Krsna prasadam went to meet Lord Shiva enroute and upon Lord Shiva's inquiring Naradji from where he was coming and why he was so blissful, he said that he just had Krsna prasadam. Seeing the state of Naradji, Lord Shiva wanted to taste Krsna Prasadam and when he looked at Naradji's hands, he found one grain of rice still sticking on and after forcefully tasting it, Lord Shiva also felt ecstatic and blissful.

Seeing these both enjoying the bliss of prasadam, even Parvati Devi, who is Mahamaya, wanted the taste the same and feel the bliss but there was no option for her. So she sits in penance to get the taste of Krsna Prasadam.

Seeing her penance, Lord Jagannath appears before Mahamaya and bestows her with the greatest boon of having the pleasure of being the first person to taste His prasadam.

Then onwards when prasadam was first honored by Mahamaya, Prasadam became Mahaprasadam.
