They say that the Vedic hymns are the cerebral passage of the Lord, and His jaws of teeth are Yama, god of death, who punishes the sinners. The art of affection is His set of teeth, and the most alluring illusory material energy is His smile. This great ocean of material creation is but the casting of His glance over us.
The illusory, material energy is represented by Durgādevī, who is the wife of Girīśa, or Lord Śiva
SB.8.12.14 Purport:-
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, is known as Yogeśvara. Yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ (BG18.78). Mystic yogīs want to acquire some power by practicing the yoga system, but Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is known as the Supreme Lord of all mystic power. Lord Śiva wanted to see the Mohinī-mūrti, which was captivating the entire world, and Lord Viṣṇu was gravely thinking of how to captivate Lord Śiva also. Therefore the word bhāva-gambhīram is used here. Theillusory, material energyis represented by Durgādevī, who is the wife of Girīśa, or Lord Śiva. Durgādevī could not captivate Lord Śiva's mind, but now that Lord Śiva wanted to see Lord Viṣṇu's feminine form, Lord Viṣṇu, by His mystic power, would assume a form that would captivate even Lord Śiva. Therefore Lord Viṣṇu was grave and at the same time was smiling.
The word maya means "energy," but it can also mean "that which is not" (ma, "not"; ya, "this"). Maha-maya, the Lord's illusory energy, makes "that which is not" seem real. She deludes those who want to enjoy independent of God into forgetting their true identity as souls, as eternal servitors of God. She allures them with various proposals for material enjoyment until they become fed up and finally turn back to God and His loving service.
Prabhupāda: Yes. It is a post, thankless post. Nobody thanks, everyone derides, you see. But she is a great devotee. She tolerates and punishes. That’s all. Daivī hy esā gunamayī mama māyā duratyayā [Bg. 7.14]. She only wants to see that, “You become Krishna conscious, I leave you, that’s all.” The business of the Police is that, “You become law-abiding citizen; then I have no connection with you. So far and so long you are not a law-abiding citizen, I shall kick you as much as possible.” So Māyā’s business is like this. And we are complaining, “Why you are kicking? Why you are kicking?” “Yes, I shall kick you because you are not Krishna conscious. I shall make you Krishna conscious by kicking, kicking, kicking. That’s all. That is my business.”
But our business is to implore, trnād api sunīcena. Our preaching method is not kicking. Our preaching method is, dante nidhāya trnakam, by taking a grass in the teeth, padayor nipatya, falling down on the feet, and kāku-śatam krtvā ca aham bravīmi, and flattering you hundred times, “I’m just submitting one thing: Become Krishna conscious.” That is our process.
But Māyā’s process is different. She’ll say, “Why shall you become Krishna conscious? You just enjoy and I shall kick you very nicely. That’s all.” And he accepts, “Yes, you kick me and let me enjoy, but I am not going to these Krishna conscious persons.” (laughter) You see? Practically, Māyā’s business, our business is same, but her process is different, our process is different. But people like her process.
Not to talk of other insignificant creatures, the whole universe and even the great-great-grand father Brahma was fascinated by the Illusory Energy of Godhead. The Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (demons) charmed with her sweet words agreed to her proposal. Most wonderful is the influence of Vishnu’s Illusory Energy. Not only the Gods and the demons but all animate and inanimate beings of the whole world being fascinated by her influence mistake their gross bodies of flesh and blood to be their real selves, forget Godhead, consider their fragile wife, son, daughter, friend, wealth to be their life-long companions and thereby burn within themselves with the threefold misery attending upon birth and death, fear and disease, etc.
My dear Lord Sambhu, who within this material world but you can surpass My illusory energy? People are generally attached to sense enjoyment and conquered by its influence. Indeed, the influence of material nature is very difficult for them to surmount.
Of the three chief demigods—Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara—all but Viṣṇu are under the influence of māyā. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta, they are described as māyī, which means "under māyā's influence." But even though Lord Śiva associates with māyā, he is not influenced. The living entities are affected by māyā, but although Lord Śiva apparently associates with māyā, he is not affected. In other words, all living entities within this material world except for Lord Śiva are swayed by māyā. Lord Śiva is therefore neither viṣṇu-tattva nor jīva-tattva. He is between the two.
Dear Lord, unless one worships the lotus feet of great devotees, one will be conquered by the illusory energy, and his intelligence will be bewildered. Indeed, who has not been carried away by the waves of material enjoyment, which are like poison? Your illusory energy is unconquerable. No one can see the path of this material energy or tell how it is working.(SB 5.3.14)
purport:- If one is serious about escaping māyā’s influence and returning home, back to Godhead, one must associate with a sādhu (devotee). That is the verdict of all scriptures. By the slight association of a devotee, one can be freed from the clutches of māyā. Without the mercy of the pure devotee, one cannot get freedom by any means. Certainly a pure devotee’s association is necessary in order to obtain the loving service of the Lord. One cannot be freed from māyā’s clutches without sādhu-saṅga, the benediction of a great devotee.
Seeing Lord Śiva unagitated and unashamed, Lord Viṣṇu [Madhusūdana] was very pleased. Thus He resumed His original form and spoke as follows.
Purport:- Although Lord Śiva was aghast at the potency of Lord Viṣṇu, he did not feel ashamed. Rather, he was proud to be defeated by Lord Viṣṇu. Nothing is hidden from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for He is in everyone’s heart. Indeed, the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (15.15), sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca: “I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness.” Whatever happened had taken place under the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore there was no cause to be sorry or ashamed. Although Lord Śiva is never defeated by anyone, when defeated by Lord Viṣṇu he felt proud that he had such an exalted and powerful master.
Lord Shiva who got defeated my lord's illusory potency was proud to be defeated and we also are proud to be defeated by her all the time and are greatful that she kicks us and teaches us a lesson to surrender to Lord. As Lord's illusory potency no one can defeat.. Only 12 mahajans headed by Braham, Narada and Lord shiva are exempt.
and pure devotees who have no desires except the desire of surrendering to the supreme lord. They only can defeat the illusory potency of Lord. Serving such pure souls we may be get glanced by Lord then maya cannot harm us.
Hare Krishna.
