Translation

Those with the vision of eternity can see that the imperishable soul is transcendental, eternal, and beyond the modes of nature. Despite contact with the material body, O Arjuna, the soul neither does anything nor is entangled.

Does it mean when we chant hare krishna japa its done by the soul?

  • "the soul neither does anything"

SP repeats Baladeva V.'s tika to 13.31: vinAza-zUnyo nirguNatvAd vizuddha-jJAnAnandatvAn na yuddha-yajJAdi-karma karoti: He does not perform actions such as fighting or sacrifice, because he is without material guNas, being pure knowledge and bliss (nirguNatvAt).

BV elaborates in his tika to 13.20: The jIva is the cause in the sense of being the enjoyer of happiness and distress which are offered by prakRti. He is the agent in enjoying them. The functions of the jIva are to preside over prakRti and experience happiness and distress. Since prakRti is the agent in regards to production of the body and senses, but is itself exploited by the jIva, the jIva is the main cause or doer. The author of VedAnta says kartA zAstrArthavattvAt: the soul is the agent, not prakRti, since that is the meaning of the scriptures. (VedAnta sUtra 2.3.31) It will also be stated later that the Lord as the doer must be accepted in all cases, as was stated earlier (the Lord is the creator, maintainer and destroyer).

    and continues in 13.21.

conclusion: Jiva has the intention to chant (in that sense she is a doer), the subtle and physical body / prakrti produce the sound (in that sense they're doers) under the direction of the Paramatma (in that sense He is the doer).

  • We are conditioned living entities, We forgot our position and fell down to this material plane due to our anarthas. So, as to revive our orginal consciousness and go back to godhead, we are following the imperishable path known as Bhakti Yoga, which is as described by Krishna in Chapter 12. While we are in this material plane, we(mind and senses) do many activities which doesnt help in reviving our original consciousness.

So, coming back to your question, Does it mean when we chant hare krishna japa is it done by the soul?

The only business of the soul is to serve Krishna. But since we dont have the REALIZATION that we aren't the body, but the soul, we are forced to work. (REALIZATION IS COMPLETE DIFFERENT FROM HAVING KNOWLEDGE)

So, when we chat hare krishna japa its done by our mind and senses to awaken the original consciousness to realize the we are the soul.

Hare Krishna japa is not done by soul, but its done for the soul.

    • i agree with that but what about sprhrti? I think thats the right spelling

  • One problem i have with 'the soul does nothing is' doesnt the soul give consiousness to the material body? So how is it that it DOES nothing?
