Kamdev born as pradhyumn

Hare Krishna to all the devotees

All glories to srila Prabhupada

Kamdev was born as pradhyumn, as son of rukmini devi and sri krishna. As srila Prabhupada tells in his krishna book, this pradyuman was jiva tattva and not vishnu tattva pradyuman.

Demigods also came with lord in different forms as to assist him in his leelas.

Still , I want to know why did kamdev came as the son of rukmini devi and sri krishna and was called pradyuman.

  • Hare Krishna,

I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhāratas [Arjuna]. ( BG 7.11)

O son of Pṛthā, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men. (7.10 BG)

From these sentences of Bhagawan it is clear that the original Kama without Raaga ( Lust without attachment) is Krishna. Krishna says, He himself is the Lust.

Lust, lust for sex life, kāma, or any sense gratification---if it is not against religious principles, then Kṛṣṇa says, "I am that kāma. I am that lust." ( There is  difference between Lust for selfish satisfaction and Lust for giving pleasure to Lord which is devoid of selfish interest).

Krishna is saying He the father of that lust which is devoid of Selfishness.

So, now it is very clear that Krishna is the Orginal Lust and surely his son rightfully will be Pradyumna ( cupid).

Kamadev who was burned down by Lord Shiva is Jiva tattva..  But the Pradyuma who is reborn to Sri Krishna and Rukmani is  not jiva tattva He is Vishnu tattva.

Because, Pradyumna is one of the 4 important Vishnu's forms ( Chaturvyuha)

    Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.

    Hare Krishna

Krishna being the father of lust and that is why kamdev being born as pradhyumn is understandable. Thank you for that.

But you said that this pradyuman was vishnu tattva whereas srila Prabhupada in Krishna book writes that he was jiva tattva.

Is it because he had a portion of prowess of pradyuman (the vishnu tattva one) ?

      • he has an ansh of Krishna so he is vishnu tattva. Because he is one of the 4 initial vishnu forms ( charvyuha)

Kama deva with attachement ( maya moha) is jiva tattva

Kam deva without moha is Vishnu tattva

Cupid who got burned down by Lord Shiva is Jiva tattva

and He begin born from Krishna now he is transformed in Vishnu tattva. He is purified Passion without Attachement.

in krishna lila kamadev was born as pradymuna in krishna book lila why was this guy krishna son he was birned to ashes by shiva i dont get it search online for good answes

I’ll check the primary story sources first, then I’ll give you the plain explanation rather than just repeating the plot.

    Thought for 1m 4s

You’re not wrong to be confused. The story only makes sense when you join two separate lilas together.

The clearest answer I found is this:

Kamadeva was burned by Shiva, but he was not finished forever. In the Shiva Purana, after Shiva burns Kama to ashes, Shiva says Kama will remain bodiless until Vishnu appears as Krishna, marries Rukmini, and then Kama will be born from Krishna and Rukmini as Pradyumna. Shiva even says Shambara will kidnap the child, Rati will wait there, and Pradyumna will later kill Shambara and get Rati back.

    So the simple version is:

Shiva burned Kamadeva’s body. Krishna later gave him a new body as Pradyumna.

In the Bhagavatam / Krishna Book version, it says Kamadeva had been burned by Rudra’s anger, then “to obtain a new body” he entered/merged into Vāsudeva and was born from Krishna and Rukmini as Pradyumna.

Why Krishna’s son specifically? Because in Vaishnava theology, Krishna/Vāsudeva is the source behind that divine power. Krishna Book says Cupid/Kamadeva was a part connected with Vāsudeva, and after being burned by Shiva, he received his body again by being begotten by Krishna in Rukmini’s womb.

There is also one subtle point: the Kamadeva who was burned is not exactly the same as the eternal Vishnu-tattva Pradyumna of the catur-vyuha. Krishna Book makes that distinction: the demigod Cupid/Kamadeva is jiva-tattva, but he receives special power connected with Pradyumna, so he appears as Krishna’s son named Pradyumna.

So think of it like this:

First lila: Kamadeva disturbs Shiva’s meditation and is burned. Between the lilas: he remains without his old body.
Krishna lila: he is restored by taking birth as Krishna and Rukmini’s son, Pradyumna.
Purpose: he defeats Shambara, reunites with Rati/Mayavati, and returns to Dvaraka.

So it is not “how can a dead guy become Krishna’s son?” In the Hindu/Puranic logic, only his body was destroyed; his identity continued, and his next body was arranged through Krishna.

i get that but kamadeva seems like a not very cool dude so how can he be born as krishna son

    Thought for 16s

Yeah, this is the important bit: Kamadeva being “not very cool” does not mean he is an evil asura. He is a deva representing desire, attraction, fertility and worldly love. That power can be dangerous, but it is also part of creation.

In the Shiva story, Kama is not just randomly being dirty-minded. The devas send him because Tārakāsura can only be killed by Shiva’s son, and Shiva is absorbed in meditation. So Kama tries to awaken desire in Shiva so Shiva and Parvati’s union can eventually lead to Skanda/Kartikeya’s birth. That does not make Kama spiritually pure, but it means he is doing a cosmic job, not acting like a demon.

The Vaishnava explanation is even more specific: there are two levels of “Kamadeva”. One is the ordinary celestial Cupid, connected with material desire. The higher, spiritual “Kamadeva” principle is connected with Krishna/Pradyumna. Krishna Book says the Cupid demigod is jīva-tattva, not the eternal Vishnu-category Pradyumna, but he is empowered by Pradyumna’s potency and therefore takes birth as Krishna’s son named Pradyumna.

So the answer is not: “bad lusty guy became Krishna’s son because anything goes.”

    It is more like:

Material desire got burned by Shiva. Then that same desire-principle was purified/restored through Krishna and appeared as Pradyumna.

That is why the story is actually quite deep. Shiva burns uncontrolled desire. Krishna later re-establishes divine love/desire in a purified form. Kama as ordinary lust is dangerous. Kama connected to Krishna becomes beautiful, heroic and dharmic.

Also, Krishna having someone as a son does not always mean “this person was morally perfect before”. In Krishna-lila, even enemies get liberated by contact with Krishna. So for a deva like Kamadeva to be restored through Krishna’s family is not strange. It shows Krishna’s power to transform the lower form of desire into something divine.

Plain English: Kama was not promoted because he was cool. He was purified, empowered, and placed into Krishna’s lila for a purpose.
