Yes, in job place we can chant on counters, or else on mind. In the reality it is better to chant even when we walk, in the bus...in our mind or in counters.
But our main rounds we have to try to chant on Neem beads or Tulasi beads. Some one's main rounds might be 4 rounds, someone's 8 someone's 16 or over. So the main rounds should be chanted on Japa Mala.
Even Lord Chaitanya used to chant in Japa Mala. So it is very serious.
Also Tulasi Maharani purifies our mind and body helping us to chant better.

those who do not follow 4 regulative principles recommended to chant on Neem beads.
Because one should not offend Tulasi Maharani by touching Her if he or she is not pure in the sense is not following human life principles.
