Can any of the prabhus or matajis kindly enlighten me on this? Is the so called "vegetarian yogurt" (that without Rennet and Gelatin) a vegetarian food in the true sense since it contains cultured bacteria either in the 'live' or 'dormant' state? Yogurt is Lord Krishna's one of the favorite dishes. He would often steal yogurt from the Gopis and Mother Yashoda. Hence, yogurt is acceptable as a food in the mode of goodness by the Vaishnavas. However, I'm still not able to perceive it being completely vegetarian. Do forgive me for being ignorant. Jai Shree Radhe Krishna!!!

Cow dung and conch shell is stool and bone of animal. According to shastars, if one touched the stool or bone of any animal, we have to take bath. It is considered unclean. But Cow dung and conch shell is considered sacred. The cow dung is used to purify the temple and conch is used in deity worship. We do not use it because we like it or want to do it. We use them because shastras has approved them to be sacred. If is say since the stool of a cow is sacred, the stool of a brahamana is also sacred, then it is nonsense. That is not acceptable because shastras do not support it. Similarly, Krishna likes milk and milk products and it is mentioned in the shastras and we just accept them.
In US, milk is considered as non veg because it is a animal product. When I visited US last year, i was surprised to see dairy section contained milk, egg, meat etc in wall mart. But according to scriptures, if the life is not taken away by the animal then it is not non veg. when we take milk out of cow, the cow does not die. When u want to take out meat, the animal has to be killed and that is condemned.
Milk and milk's downstream products are all considered by vaishnavas as eligible food, since the Lord Himself enjoyed milk products in every form. This custom has come down to us since the advent of Lord Krishna Himself ! All the archaryas and goswamis down the ages themselves consumed milk and curd, and did not consider them as uneligible food. Srila Prabhupada also did not consider milk and milk products as uneligible food.
So instead of technical analysis, one should consider the historical perspective and historical acceptance of milk and milk products as sanctioned food.
Dear Radhika Mataji, is Yogurt really a vegetarian food?.. I don't know, but we only consume what we call Krishnatarian food. I'll first attend to your question, besides the yougurt which contains rennet and gelatin. The bacteria in live or dormant state are found all over, even on your washed hands. They are in the air we breathe. Are we consuming them? NO! They are given new place to live i.e. in our body. Our body is incapable of consuming bacteria.
Regarding the Krishnatarian concept. Everything we consume belongs to Krishna, what ever we prepare for food.. we should offer first to Krishna. Obviously only those things which Krishna had prescribed and only in the mood he prescribed. Simply eating vegetables and being vegetarian is not what we should be, we should be Krishnatarians.
