Is this true story from scriptures?

Karna actually was Dambhodva asura in past life. He did penance to Surya bhagwan to get 1000 armors. No one can defeat him. If one had to defeat him they have to break the armour. But as soon as the armour was broken by the opponent the person will die. This was his vardaan.

So, Nar- Narayan rishi defeated him and broken all the armours... when One was breaking the armour the other did penance for 1000 years and then the other would break another armour.. this was happening since long long past lives. Suppose Nar breaks the armour then he dies.. meanwhile 1000 yrs of tapasya was done by Narayan so.. in the next atttempt Narayan would break the armour and Nar would be doing the penance for 1000 years. ( alternately).

During Mahabharat times Kunti prayed to Sun god to have a baby ( before her marriage ) because you know she got some vardaan that she can use to have santaan from demigods. So she was curious to use it and used the vardaan before her marriage and Sun God appeared and gave her boon to have a son with him. As per that Kunti became pregnant with Sun god's son.. ( KARNA). But for the fear of society calling her bad names because .. she wasn't married ..she abandons the son. So, basically. our Karna is the first of Pandavas. And being son of Surya and maha pativrata Kunti maharani who was also a great devotee of Lord Sri Krishna.. + Sun God who is the first to recieve Bhagwad gita revalation from Sri Krishna HIMSELF as per Bhagvad gita.

The Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvān instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikṣvāku. (BG 4.1)

So you can understand from this that Karna had many good qualities of both Sun God+ Kunti Maharani.

But then choices he made were the cause of his downfall.

Karna is great donar. He is virtuous because his charity has no limit. If anyone asked him anything.... he would simply give it without thinking twice. When Karna was asked for his armour he simply cut it off and gave ... even if it was close to skin and he was bleeding when he cut the armour off his body. Only because a brahmana came to his door to asked ( and it was actually Indra in disguise) but still he didn't think twice. Krishna praised this quality of Karna many times also. But when Lord Sri Krishna told him who actually he was.. ( Kunti' son) and first of the Pandavas... he understands his position but he has given a word to Duryodhana ( friendship vow) and because of his association with Duryodhana and taking wrong choices in life led to his down fall.

One time Shakuni and duryodhana were planning to send Pandavas to Varnavrata and they sketching a plan for killing the pandavas by setting the laksha griha on fire. Karna didn't support this idea. Instead he told lets call them and fight why do this type of cunningness .. Basically,.. You can see Karna has some goodness of Kunti and goodness of Sun god in him .. But that was covered up by associating with Wrong persons ( Shakuni and Duryodhana).. Only because duryodhana said Karna you are my friend and he gave Karna Kingdom of Anga. Karna totally forgot what is dharma also ..

When we associate with bad people even the goodness in us will leave us slowly .. Karna is one such character whom Krishna also praised for his virtues Esp. when it came to Dana. ( CHarity). When emphasising to Arjuna about the character of Karna ( being how he is a pandava ) he told this story which you mentioned above " golden mountain "

But because of bad association look what happened to Karna. Karna even fell so low that .. he gave suggestion to drag draupadi into the main hall and disrobe her and even called her prostitute. Ofcoruse later he regrets his action but see..how he fell down from being a good person in the bad association of duryodhana and Shakuni.

One must make friends carefully.

Rarely we find someone like Sandal wood.

Sandal wood tree if you see. always the snakes are present near sandal wood tree.. Snakes wrap around the sandalwood. But Chandan ( sandalwood ) never loses its sugandh ( goodness, purity) ... but on the otherhand...

If you mix milk ( pure) with water ... Milk will become diluted and lose its purity.

One must be like sandal wood even in the presence of bad association if one is able to maintain his good qualities that type of person is said to be great and saintly.
