Yes, it is mandatory to have the Guru to achieve Krishna consciousness because the Supreme Authority Lord Sri Krishna Himself recommended it in BG 4.34:
tad viddhi praṇipātena
paripraśnena sevayā
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ
jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ
TRANSLATION
"Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth."
Also, in your daily life in this material world one need a teacher to learn the material things right from the birth itself. Parents are the first teacher to teach how to feed yourself. Even in animal kingdom also, mother animal teaches its young baby how to drink its own milk. No one can claim that one does not need any teacher in ones' life. It's impossible. So, how can you expect to know the "Highest Truth", no one needs Guru? Even to learn Math or complicated sciences, you go to a bonafide teacher in School or University. Similarly, to know the "Absolute Truth" you need a proper Guru.
One can not achieve KC without mercy of Lord or mercy of His pure devotees.
Without that, non of the living beings can reach the goal of life, no matter of anything.

In modern present time being Guru can be very materially profitable, therefore most quoted verse from
BG is 4.34 :
"Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth."
.
Unfortunately, those who use to quote that verse very often, usually say that you MUST approach Guru to achieve KC, despite such statement is not being written.
Anyway, those who wont to learn knowledge about Absolute Truth need to approach spiritual teacher, but to achieve KC one do not need the knowledge, otherwise persons like Kamsa would never achieve it. What to talk about pure devotees of Vraja and many others.
Therefore having Guru is not mandatory for KC, but mercy of Lord in any of His aspects, or mercy of His pure devotees. Having on mind, that even mercy of His pure devotees is actually just a drop of His mercy to.
