Since ego is integral part to soul, It cannot be give. But when it is contaminated by material modes , and we think ourselves to be body, and relate to it like "I am man, I am Indian" which is called dehatma buddhi, whereas real/true ego is asham brahmasmi  -> I am soul, spirit spark, part and parcel of Krishna, then it is uncontaminated (pure).

So I think that the reason for material attraction is identifying with body, that is ego. So the real reason for lust, anger, greed, etc. Which arise due to material attraction are caused by ego?
