On this Indira Ekadasi, please observe fasting as much as you can according to your health condition. If you can not remain fasting, you may take Ekadasi prasadam one time only. But it is very important to complete your chanting of Mahamantra 25 rounds or more in the memory of the departed soul. Thus Lord Mukunda the bestower of liberation, certainly will deliver the departed soul.
It is stated in Srimad Bhagavatam:
devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitènam na kinkaro nayam rni ca rajan sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam gato mukundam parihrtya kartam
"Anyone who has completely surrendered unto Krsna, Mukunda, giving up all other duties, is no longer a debtor, nor is he obliged to anyone—not the demigods, nor the sages, nor the people in general, nor kinsmen, nor humanity, nor forefathers." (Bhag. 11.5.41)
Therefore, if you are a devotee of the Supreme Personality of God Head Sri Krishna, you do not have to worry for the departed soul. Your only business is to satisfy Krishna through chanting at least twenty five rounds of Mahamantra on this Ekadasi Day so that Lord Hari will take care of that ancestor.
The procedure is a mere sankalp (mentally offer to the deceased soul) before, during or after the ekadasi.
Typically, when we do the shradh karma of the deceased immediately after death, on the 12 day or so, there is a ceremony in which everyone has to say how many ekadasi they will do for the deceased. If you have said then and are doing the fast now, its enought. If you have not said then, still you can do the fast and mentally offer the results to the deceased.

This is for someone who has died around 34 years ago( at the age of 26) in a fire accident after suffering for 18 days in hospital with 90% burn. One can imagine how much pain she has gone through. As this was an untimely death, I personally have always worried where she might be now ... may be still sufferring ... Actually the immediate family members were not religious type - though they have done one token kind of ceremony most of the years by some brahmin. So I was considering me being a close relative could do something to help her.
