Mahamantra is a 32 syllable mantra.
it has 16 names in it.
One cannot change the count. As Mahamantra is in Anushtup Chandas.
Anushtup means 32 aksharas.
if Ram is used instead of Rama. Only 28 aksharas will be there, then no chandas is formed. Chandas is the foot of the vedas, without proper chandas, concentration of stotra or mantra won’t be there. Thus, Rama is the apt pronunciation.

pls. refer this article.
It is stated that..
“As Srila Prabhupada’s secretary and more than once in any case, I sat before Srila Prabhupada chanting my japa. Sometimes we hear people, and myself, saying “Hare Ram, Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare”. Srila Prabhupada would stop me and (more than once) say to me: “Chant the entire mantra” and he would proceed to do so. It is Ra-ma.
(As told by Pusta Krishna das ACBSP)
As Pusta Krishna Prabhu witnessed Srila Prabhupada’s correction, in our chanting we want to please the spiritual master and chant the mantra correctly.
Another important point to consider in deciding if we should chant Ram or Rama is if in our chanting we do not say the whole RAMA but just say RAM without the last “A” sound then it will not be a 32 syllable mantra.
Throughout the vedas the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is referred to as the 32 syllable mantra.
Ha-re Kri-shna Ha-re Kri-shna Kri-shna Kri-shna Ha-re Ha-re
Ha-re Ra-ma Ha-re Ra-ma Ra-ma Ra-ma Ha-re Ha-re !!!
total is 32 syallbles. and 16 names.

However you may say Ram or Rama Lord is merciful and sees only your endeavor in taking his name. But still.. according to vedas and rules of Sanskrit grammar 32 syllables have to be chanted not 28.
Hare Krishna.
Hare Krishna Prabhu, i heard it in His Holiness Bhakti Vigyana Maharaja's lecture in Russian, but long ago, if i find that i will say exactly in which year He gave it.
Nice to see You again here dear Radhika Mataji!
it is recommended that we have to move with our lips when we pronounce the Names. And sometimes even thou it is chanted as "Ram" but if we do our lips as ducks :-) then we can pronounce quicker also as "Rama".
-------
there one Muslim was dying in Jaganatha Puri he had Lord Jaganatha's Prasad in his hand but when he felt into ground in his last breath, his food felt far from him. Then pig came and started to eat that Prasadam. But Muslim person wanting to kick him away cried out: "Haram! Haram! Haram!"
Then left his body. took birth in Vaikuntha. How? Because saying "Haram" he called the Name of Ram.
HEY RAM!!!
-----------------
it is not recommended to chant like the next:
on the place of Krishna - Krisna
also not recommended to say Hare as Harey
in Krishna "r" should be not American "r" (not as like in bird, but as like in rural) but Indian.
Also it is not good French "r"
--------
But and first thing is devotion! If we chant with devotion Krishna will give us capability to chant correctly. As like in the beginning child murmers something but mother understands, by the time he will improve his pronunciation.
Your servant.

With respect to pronunciation kindly check out the below link.

But as declared by the propagator of this Great Maha Mantra Himself, it works like blazing fire and the seeds of this fabulous Maha Mantra even create the Bhava in the mind, heart and intellect of the chanter without offenses(the four major and related ones on platforms of kaya, vacha and manasa) as is appreciated by the Supreme Person to whose Divine Lotus Feet it is an appeal to be kindly accepted at His eternal servitor ship.
Even I have gone through this and I had the same query in my mind and the answer also came by itself due to His Divine Grace even on wile sinner worms like me.
Try to pronounce the name of Ram as Rama and in the continuity of your chanting it will automatically pronounce as Rah - muh and perfection is guaranteed both with respect to development of your Bhava unto His Divine Lotus Feet and also the end result.
The fact that you are asking this in an open forum indicates the genuinity of your intention.
It will definitely attract His Blessings. There is no need to worry.
I am sure.

i searched here for Srila Prabhupada's Japa but could not find. If You find His Japa recordings, listen sometimes He chants as "Ram". Or find out other Guru Maharaja's recordings and practice with Them.

Jai Shri Krishna..
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare..
The Rama in the Mahamantra is refereing to the pleasure giving potency of Krishna..
"The Vedas recommend that in the present age the most effective means of achieving self-realization is to constantly hear about, glorify and remember the all-good supreme Lord, who is known by numerous names. The most important names in this age ‘Krsna’, which means ‘he who is all attractive’, another is ‘Rama’ which means ‘He who is the reservoir of all pleasure’, and ‘Hare’ indicates the inconceivable energy of the Lord."
