First of all we should understand why we sing and dance in temple. If we sing and dance for our pleasure, then the whole idea is wrong... :( We have to dance for the pleasure of Radha and Krishna (or the deities present in the temple). When you are in this mood to give them pleasure, you will forget about the externals. I have a little obese body and feel little odd to dance in kirtan. But what I have seen is when I dance, many get inspired and also join me to dance. If by my dancing other devotees who did not wish to dance can join to dance and give more pleasure to Lord, then why not. If people around u thinks ur crazy, then be it. And its a fact that devotees are crazy for Krishna. Forget everything and dance.

Hare Krishna Romit Kelkar Prabhu! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

    It is very nice question!

the most important thing that we shy to dance is that we are "little bit" attached to our body.

    how to over come?

-- for example, as i am in the female body also too much shy, but when you know that you are doing it not for anyone's senses except Krishna in the form of Deity, you will start to dance even more beautiful.

-- in the beginning one just has to hold up hands and move with legs as Srila Prabhupada thought.

--when You hold up Your hands think of Krishna, that: "my Lord, i am Yours! please, forgive me! please, do not neglect me!" Just pray!!!

--try to listen what You chant: "Hareeee! Krishnaaa! Ramaaa!" try to listen the Kirtan leader attentively, by doing this You will forget about Your material body but that You are just an insignificant servant of Krishna and all around.

--try to make a friends among devotees. when you are surrounded with friends it will be easy to open Your heart and fully accept Your smallest position.

The main thing is that we have to become like a child! child really accepts and knows that he is only small, helpless entity. without  his mother he will die, will be lost. Hare Krishna!

At least it is the first and main step that You have DESIRE to dance for the satisfaction of God and Your Gurudev!

    Good luck!
