How to transform your material job into a spiritual one?

I am currently pursuing a computer science and engineering course. In the future, when the products that we computer people make are out in the market, they have a potential to either elevate or degrade people. How can I live with this even if the money I make out of it is used to serve Krishna?

  • HARE KRISHNA PRABHUJI, PAMHO ALL GLORIES TO SRILA PRABHUPADA. AS FAR AS I GOT THE KNOWLEDGE THROUGH MY SIKSHA GURUS THAT WHATEVER ACTIVITY YOU DO I.E MATERIAL OR SPIRITUAL, YOU SHOULD DO THE ACTIVITY FOR THE PLEASURE OF KRISHNA. WHENEVER YOU GOING TO DO ANY WORK, THINK WHETHER THE STEP YOU ARE TAKING GIVES PLEASURE TO KRISHNA AND GURU. IF YOU DO THIS, THEN THE JOB U R DOING IS SPIRITUAL. IN THIS WAY WE CAN TRANSFORM OUR ANY MATERIAL JOB INTO A SPIRITUAL ONE.

    • Thanks, Prabhuji! Thank you for your good advice. I will try my best to follow it.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

I hope you understand a little hindi. One of the famous quotes is - Kabira teri jhopri, gal katiyan ke paas, jo karenge so bharenge, tu kyun bhaye udaas. It means - Saint Kabir das is saying, that your house is near a butcher's place. Whatever anyone does, he will reap the fruits of his actions, why are you becoming sad? In other words, each one is responsible for his own actions. Pls prabhuji, do not try to become God by monitoring or taking on the responsibility of what your customer does with the computer on yourself.

Then, logically, every person who sells a knife must live in mortal fear - the same knife can be used to cut fruits, non veg or to kill. Computer is merely an instrument - how anyone uses it is his karma, u dont pile it on to yourself.

You take care of your sadhana, make computers and sell them and use the money or a part of it for KC activities. If anything more is required of you, Krsna will show you the way, have faith.

    Haribol,

    Rashmi

    • Nice Explanation Mataji !! Dandvat Pranam !!
      Hare Krishna !!

    • Thank you so much for clearing my doubt, Mataji. In Krishna and his devotees, I have faith.
      Hare Krishna!
  • Hare Krishna, Mataji. I agree with you.

But I'm worried about the bad things that my material job might do for the people. Say, someone makes a computer and uses the money he makes out of selling it for KC. But the customer who bought the computer gets addicted to it. Isn't he responsible for that?
    • Thank you so much for your reply, Mataji. I shall follow your advice.

then along with computer Prabhu, give the links of web sites about Krishna :) then he will use Internet and download lectures, play Krishna Conscious games...

Goal of life is to become mad as per His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami Maharaja :) but mad for Krishna.

So let them use computer and become mad of hearing lectures about Krishna or preaching, reading ebooks of Srila Prabhupada...

Duty of a business man is to sell a product which costumer wants and it is not in his control for what that person will use this computer.

But for sure we know that business man should not sell meat, eggs, cigarettes, alcohol because we already know that these things can be used only for sinful things.

But computer itself is not something sinful. It can be used in the service of Krishna very nicely.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

In life, we will always face some situations which are giving us name, fame and money and others where all of this is taken away from us. This is one of the ways in which maya devi teaches us the "dukhalayam ashashwatam" aspect of the world. The thing to understand and adopt is - we are not the doers, we are merely the instruments. The doer is the Supreme.

If we get any name, fame, or money because of what we make, we should bow down to guru and Srila Prabhupada and tell them that all the name, fame and money is their mercy, because of them. So that when it goes away, or when our time is not good, we are able to handle the adversities of life.

Even if we are practising sadhakas, good time and bad time will strike each of us. We have to learn from Bhagavad Gita to be equipoised in both. Pls see 2.14 of BG, matrasparshastu kaunteya.... its one of my favourite verses. I have recited it to myself in times of extreme joy and grief, both, to keep my emotions in check. It helps.

What you need to do is chant your committed rounds w/o fail, follow 4 regulative principles. The rest will fall in place.

The entire challenge of spiruality is to apply it in our daily lives. The more we can do so, the more Krishna Conscious we become. I had heard in one of the lectures - a devotee is one who is always preaching. Seldom he has to open his mouth to preach. That is what we should try to attain.

    Haribol,

    Rashmi
