I understand that to return to Krishna, we must pray and chant. But, what controls our removal from rebirth? Does Krishna decide when you have chanted enough to rejoin him? Or is that all on you? Does Krishan remove your sins, or is that your doing? How does this all work?

PAMHO.
It is not a mathematical formula, it is mercy which enables us to achieve service to lotus feet of Their lordships Sri Sri Radha Krsna.
When we chant, we become purified, our karma gets destroyed and we attain love of Godhead. Unless one chants and realises this, one is not likely to understand.
All this works only as a causeless mercy of the vaishnavas.

In love there is selfless giving not asking something in return. Isn't it?
Mother loves her kids so she does all work for the kids and does the mother excpet something in return from the kids? That is selfless love of the mother.
Our love towards Krishna should be selfless giving.
Ofcourse Krishna is most capable for removing you from the cycle of rebirts making you sin free.
Krishna said do all work without expecting for results in Bhagwad gita. Results will come to you as per Lord's plan isn't it?
2.47 Verse Bhagwad Gita.
karmany evadhikaras te
ma phalesu kadacana
ma karma-phala-hetur bhur
ma te sango 'stv akarmani
You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.
Pls. keep doing work for Krishna with Love not like Business.
Business mean I give you this you give me that. Give and take is Business.
You do chanting for the it gives you peace of mind. You pray to Krishna because you love doing service to Krishna.
forget about all the removal from rebrith, or removal of sins. Ofcourse, Krishna will give you its not a big deal for Krsna to do that.
But Out main aim in not asking for ourself. In love there is only giving, seeing some one happy is what is love.
A father brings toys for the kid. Kids smiles and plays with them. Father is just happy seeing that. That is love. Father doesn't expect that the son should repay him back when he grows up.
Don't do chanting with the main intention that I must be sin free I must not get rebirth. I must get Goloka. these all are taken care off automatically. You just love Krishna thats all.
