First we have to chant 16 rounds and follow 4 regulative principles for minimum 1 year to be able to qualify. Additional qualification required is certificate of ISKCON Disciple Course and recommendation from local ISKCON temple president. So you need to get into a congregation, and visit the local temple regularly. You shoudl have read basic books - Bhagawad Gita, Sri Isopanishad, 1st Canto of Srimad Bhagawatam, Nectar of Devotion.
Some temples have shiksha programs, where they will give certificates on progress of individual devotee. That helps them monitor. You have to contact your local temple and your congregation leader to know more details.
I am new to ISKCON society too. My interest increased after I completely read the "Bhagwat Gita - As it is". As per your advise above, this is one of the books that is to be read. Is there any level of proficiency that has to be achieved? If yes, how do we achieve this proficiency?
We gain indepth knowledge of Gita so that we can apply it in our lives and lead a life that the lord wanted us to live.
As far as initiation is concerned, it is better you contact your local ISKCON temple and the disciples of the guru you want initiation from. Each temple can have its own requirements for recommendation and each guru can have his own.
Thank you for the interest in Gita - it is so refreshing to read this.
