Lord Krsna told Karna about his real brothers and his birth and told him to join the Pandavas in the war. Karna refused to join the pandavas because of his loyalty with Duryodhana. The lord gives the option to every jivatma to follow His instructions, but leaves the choice to the jivatma. THe jivatma is responsible for the consequences of his choice. as you know, karnas father was sun god vivasvan and having that on mind,
sri krishna had symphaty for him before the battle.
knowing, that all accept pandavas will going to die, sri krishna gave him opotunity to change the sides.
