Destiny and freewill

Hare Krishna,

As we know our present consciousness is due to our past activities.Lot of times this happen that our past karmas force us to do some actions or activities or simply to take decisions. Some times ,a minor decisions  or actions cause a new diversion or turn to our life.So exactly how can one distinguish his action is due to his free will or due to his destiny(previous karmas)?

  • Hare Krsna!

Please accept my humble obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You just have to surrender all your activities, work and senses to the Lord. Than you don't have to think about the rest.

After surrendering just leave everything to the Lord.

When we submit to the ownership by Krishna, we submit to His direction and the moment one is directed by Krishna, then Srimad Bhagavatam tells us that one who allows himself to be directed by the Lord, he is also protected by the Lord. This is the beauty of understanding the word Hrshikesha. When one understands that Krishna is Hrshikesha, then one submits his senses at the lotus feet of Krishna and when he submits it to Krishna, Krishna takes full ownership of the senses and from that ownership, He gives direction on how our senses should move. Because we are trying to engage our senses in the service of Krishna, then Krishna obtains full control over our senses and that means we go on automatic mode/remote control. When the plane is on auto-pilot, it flies very smooth. The pilot can go to sleep. The moment the pilot switches from auto mode to manual mode, he has so much tension because everything is dependent on him and he has to maneuver very carefully. Devotees are very smart. They prefer auto-pilot as compared to manual pilot. Maharaj said, "Why to fly the plane manually when we can fly on auto-pilot and go to sleep! That is much better."

When we understand that Krishna is the controller of our senses, then we also come to understand that from the direction given by Krishna comes the full protection. Our senses will become completely protected by the auspiciousness of Krishna and His pure devotees. That is the beauty and secret of devotional service. Sometimes we ask ourselves how to control our senses, but we can’t control our senses. But if we allow and submit to Krishna in our heart and in our life saying, "Krishna, You own my senses. They are Yours. Let me use them in Your service." That is why we pray first thing in the morning when we get up (Vishnu-dharmottara, quoted in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa [3.91])

praatah prabodhito vishno / hrshikeshena yat tvayaa
yad yat kaarayas ishaana / tat karomi tavaajnayaa

"O Vishnu, O Ishaana, O Hrshikesha, You have awakened me, and now I am ready to do whatever You wish today."

The moment we say that, Krishna takes over our life and senses and He directs our senses in such a way that we can go to Krishna conscious programs and become very peaceful. Srimad Bhagavatam tells us that the real way to control our senses is to hold on tightly to the lotus feet of Krishna and very tightly to the lotus feet of devotees. If we do not do that, we have to hold on to the feet of Maya and the nature of Maya is to disturb us. So whenever our senses agitate us, or disturb us, we must automatically remember that Hrshikesha is the owner of our senses. Why are we unnecessarily wasting our time allowing our senses to become agitated, when they should be used in the service of Krishna? And true enough, the moment you use it for Krishna, without any separate endeavor, your senses become controlled.

    Your servant,

thank You Mataji for such a nice answer!

Yes, You are right we can not control our senses but when we with humility pray to Krishna to help us to control them then He takes charge of them. For Him to do that is very easy task.

He just wants to see our humility and dependence on Him.

      Your servant,

    • okay mata ji for your nice explanation..thank you very much..but one baic questtion arises that how can we know that what GOD want from us means what he want us to do...like in any situation how can we know that what is the will of krsna and what i am supposed to do ...because many times we get confused before taking decesion..

      • Hare Krsna!

That is easy. In the scriptures like Bhagavad-Gita, Krsna tells us what to do, how to act. This is the aim of sastras. Only just in Bhagavad-gita there are all the answers about how to live this life. When we have a guide like Krsna, supersoul in the heart, Srila Prabhupada, Lord Chaitanya, if you are surrendered internally, how can we make mistake while taking decisions?

While taking decisions you just have to think if it is for the service of Krsna or not? Everything that we do should be for the service of Krsna with love. Also while taking decisions think in long term if it is for the service of Krsna. For example you may want to go to university to learn certain things professionally so that you may perform high quality preaching activities for Lord Krsna. So in the result of all your activities if you have the desire of pleasing Krsna, than it is the correct decision. Please continue reading scriptures everyday so that you will be hearing directly from Krsna everyday and he will guide you through scriptures. Have a full faith in that.

Please hear and contemplate on this verse from Bhagavad-gita, chapter 18, text 56

In all activities just depend upon Me and work always under My protection. In such devotional service, be fully conscious of Me.

        PURPORT

When one acts in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he does not act as the master of the world. Just like a servant, one should act fully under the direction of the Supreme Lord. A servant has no individual independence. He acts only on the order of the master. A servant acting on behalf of the supreme master has no affection for profit and loss. He simply discharges his duty faithfully in terms of the order of the Lord. Now, one may argue that Arjuna was acting under the personal direction of Kṛṣṇa, but, when Kṛṣṇa is not present, how should one act? If one acts according to the direction of Kṛṣṇa in this book, as well as under the guidance of the representative of Kṛṣṇa, then the result will be the same. The Sanskrit word mat-paraḥ is very important in this verse. It indicates that one has no goal in life save and except acting in Kṛṣṇa consciousness just to satisfy Kṛṣṇa. And, while working in that way, one should think of Kṛṣṇa only: “I have been appointed to discharge this particular duty by Kṛṣṇa.” While acting in such a way, one naturally has to think of Kṛṣṇa. This is perfect Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One should, however, note that, after doing something whimsically, he should not offer the result to the Supreme Lord. That sort of duty is not in the devotional service of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One should act according to the order of Krṣna. This is a very important point. That order of Kṛṣṇa comes through disciplic succession from the bona fide spiritual master. Therefore the spiritual master’s order should be taken as the prime duty of life. If one gets a bona fide spiritual master and acts according to his direction, then his perfection of life in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is guaranteed.

And also please hear and contemplate on this verse, Bhagavad-gita, chapter 18, text 46

By worship of the Lord, who is the source of all beings and who is all-pervading, man can, in the performance of his own duty, attain perfection.

        PURPORT

As stated in the Fifteenth Chapter, all living beings are fragmental parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord. As such, the Supreme Lord is the beginning of all living entities. This is confirmed in the Vedānta-sūtra—janmādy asya yataḥ. The Supreme Lord is therefore the beginning of life of every living entity. And the Supreme Lord, by His two energies, His external energy and internal energy, is all-pervading. Therefore one should worship the Supreme Lord with His energies. Generally the Vaiṣṇava devotees worship the Supreme Lord with His internal energy. His external energy is a perverted reflection of the internal energy. The external energy is a background, but the Supreme Lord by the expansion of His plenary portion as Paramātmā is situated everywhere. He is the Supersoul of all demigods, all human beings, all animals, everywhere. One should therefore know that as part and parcel of the Supreme Lord it is his duty to render service unto the Supreme. Everyone should be engaged in devotional service to the Lord in full Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is recommended in this verse.

Everyone should think that he is engaged in a particular type of occupation by Hṛṣīkeśa, the master of the senses. And, by the result of the work in which one is engaged, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, should be worshiped. If one thinks always in this way, in full Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then, by the grace of the Lord, he becomes fully aware of everything. That is the perfection of life. The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā, teṣām ahaṁ samuddhartā. The Supreme Lord Himself takes charge of delivering such a devotee. That is the highest perfection of life. In whatever occupation one may be engaged, if he serves the Supreme Lord, he will achieve the highest perfection.

If you can, read all chapter 18 and Chapter 2 of Bhagavad-gita carefully to understand how to act.

        I hope this helps,

        Your servant,

        my humble obeisances Abhimanyu Prabhuji,

Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that His Devotees do not depend on others but does his duty according to his nature in an honest way. And is satisfied with whatever is coming easily.

Let me bring one simple example, one friend studied over 4-5 years commerce. Then in the last year she stopped her education and went to Barshana to do full devotional service. Her last education was CA. But she left it.

Her parents were very sad for that, they again and again told her to complete it. But she wanted to be "fully in Krishna Consciousness". One year past, two years past. Seeing her example, her younger sister also did not study well and fail her exams. Her father also left his job...why ? Because my friend was respected at her home as a senior and intelligent member. But when she left everyone also tried to follow her.

        In this way sufferings began.

Mother was very sad. She used to disturb here again and again to do her education...

Then my friend took advices from Devotees and started her CA classes. Her parents became very happy. Father again started to work and plus started to come to the Temple, chant the Holy Names...

After that she also says that now she feels some satisfaction in her heart.

        ---------------

In this way if some opportunity is coming easily then Devotee should accept it. For example, her mother was ready to pay all money for her classes, so it is easy. But there are things which we want to do but they are very difficult to do those we should avoid.

also in such like decision making situations we usually ask senior Devotees to whom we trust. Not to all Devotees. Because other Devotees might not know us nicely and give improper advices even though seemingly good.

          Your servant,
