yes.. there are special stones and sand often used to prepare the bed of yagnas above which the firewood is placed to grow the homagni

modern science has also concurred about water being an effective conductor of light and sound vibrations. the brahmA shakthi of sri krshnA effectively transmits through water and has the power to wash away not only external impurities but also absorb internal negative light, heat and sound vibrations that are present in living bodies. hence, the reason why sages carried no more than a kamandala of water for transmitting all their benedictions/curses through it. with a mind purified by the chant of hare krshna when you think of mAtha ganga, she grants her power to that water and krshnA's loving mercy already resides in the ganges water.

so water is such a holy substance we all need to nurture and protect.

The sand, stone, fire used in yagNas also have beneficial powers, but none can match the simplicity, power and fluidity of tranmission like water.

    I read this article somewhere:

Water can be charged with electricity as we all know, which is  a form of energy. Vedic mantras are sound energy (in fact, they are Brahman in sound form) and can charge water. This is one of the reasons as to why Temples were constructed on the banks of rivers or big tanks so that devotees can bathe in those waters that have been energized. The human body is made up of 80% water including blood and chanting of mantras helps to charge the body and helps in getting spiritual progress and powers. You would also have noticed that our Rishis used to carry Kamandalams containing water and sprinkle them while giving a "vardan" (boon) or a "shrap" (curse). Thus, the fact that water can be charged with sound energy should not be doubted in the least. No wonder, that water features very prominently in our pujas/homams whether it be intake of water ("prashnam") or sprinkling on devotees ("prokshanam") or abhisekham.

Hare Krishna dear Devotees, please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

using special mantras we can purify the water or even make it dirtier, and according to the quality of water it affects those things which it touches.

For example, Ganga's water purifies, why? because the toe of Lord Vamana Dev touched the water of causal Ocean and made that spiritual.

water is a medium which transfers things easily, words, mood also.

maybe because of that while cursing or contrary Brahmanas use water.

If a person is very powerful spiritually then his words also have power. Why? because he does not use the speech to speak nonsense but only when needed to glorify the Lord. Because of that austerity words get strength.

When such like a person blesses you then his blessings will surely be fulfilled. But when you make him angry and if he curses you then that will also will be fulfilled.

sound is very powerful. For example, brahmanas killed unrighteous king Venu with the word "aham". Killed! Finished!

we can also become powerful not for cursing but for giving blessings, doing austerity of using tongue only for needed things. not for gossips.

     Your servant,

      HK,

But why only water, why not sand, stone, fire, etc etc..??

This is a very good question. I too want to know the answer to this.

I remember watching the play of Srimad Bhagavatam entitled "Shri Krishna." After Maharaj Pariksit put the dead snake around the Sage's neck and the Sage's son returned to see this, he went to a lake and lifted a handful of water cursing Maharaj Pariksit with the curse of dying of snake bite.
