Cows in Krishna Lila

Cows in Krishna Lila
By: BISWABHUSHAN DAS & Satyaprakash Sahoo  JAGANNATH PURI (ORISSA)

HARE KRISHNA

Srimad Bhagawatam begins with glorifying the supreme Lord Krsna. But Sri Krsna in his topmost abode of goloka is absorbed in worship of the cows. His abode is centered and named around cows. Krsna lila cannot be separated from love of cows ( go prema).

As soon as Krsna appeared on earth in the jail, his father Vasudev decided to give 10,000 excellent payaswini cows in charity. When Krsna reached Vrndavan Nanda Maharaj gave lakhs of cows in charity. Sri Vrindavan is called gostha. Gostha means a place where atleast one crore (10 million) cows reside.

When Sri Krsna was brought down from Putana’s chest He was bathed with cow urine and tilak of cow dung was applied. Krsna’s body was cleaned with the tail of a cow. Dust of cows was applied on his body. Sri Krsna was happy seeing that his lila is meant to glorify go seva (service to cows).

Then when the Lord grew up he started moving around house. He would not like to play with toys but He would go to the goshala (cow shed). He would go to area where the cows and calves were moving around. The Lord would be very happy to cover His body with go raja (dust from lotus feet of cows). Mother Yashoda would go to pick up the Lord in anxiety fearing that a cow or calf might step on small Krsna.

There were special padmagandha cows in Nanda Maharaj’s goshala (cow shed). These cows would emit a wonderful lotus like fragrance. Even such fragrance would come from their milk, curd and butter milk. Even their dung and urine had a special fragrance like lotus. By the mixture of cow dung and urine of these cows a mixture was created and it was called vraj kardam. The Lord would go and sit in this mixture in goshala (cow shed). Krsna would take palmfulls of this mixture and put it on Balaram’s body. This is called Pankabhishek lila by saints. Seeing this mother Yashoda would call out and say, “Oh son it appears that you have taken an incarnation of a boar in Your last life. The Lord would reply, Oh! Mother you are saying that with anger but it is true that I took the form of boar.

Then Lord grew up a little and walking he would go near the calves. The calves would come near the Lord and smell Him. Getting the divine fragrance from the Lord the calves would jump up in ecstasy and start dancing. As the calves would stand again Lord Krsna would go slowly and catch their tail. Just by the divine touch of the Lord the calves would be joyfull and start running around the place with full energy. The Lord would keep hanging on to the tails of the calves and also enjoy the pastime. This is the love of cows and calves of Sri Krsna.

Sri Bilva Mangal Thakur in his book Krsna karnamrta says as follows – Oh! Lord You joyfully move around in mud of Vrindavan made up of cow urine, dung and dust from cows feet, but You feel hesitant to go to the yajna sthali of brahmanas. Hearing the mooing of the cows You answer them in the language of calves which You understand but when the great Brahma prays to You, Oh lord You keep quiet and stand without replying. But when calves make sound You quickly run towards them and embrace them. Oh! Lord I have understood that You don’t regard any other principle but only the love of cows. You are satisfied with only those who have love of cows in their heart.

What is Cow Protection?

“Hearing the term ‘Cow Protection,’ people typically react in two ways. Some think protection is for endangered species, and since there are billions of cows, it's better to concentrate on whales or the African elephant. Others think it may be some pagan worship of animals - the ‘sacred cow’ image.

The actual philosophical reason for cow protection is very simple; all living entities deserve protection from slaughter and other violence at the hands of humans. Not only cows, all animals have souls the same as we do. They are all children of Krsna, all dear to Him.

With this view in mind, it can be seen that slaughter is a form of MURDER.

The cow, however, is our MOTHER. Vedic philosophy teaches there are seven mothers: 1) the birth mother, 2) the nurse, 3) the wife of the father (if she is not the birth mother), 4) the wife of the king, 5) the wife of the spiritual master, 6) the earth, and 7) the cow. You may wonder why the cow is one of the seven mothers. It is because she gives her milk to nourish us.

All mothers should hold a position of respect, and since one does not kill and eat one's mother, the cow should not be killed and eaten. Likewise, the bull is our father because he can plow the earth to produce food grains. One does not kill and eat one's father and mother - not even when they are old and less economically useful.

5000 years ago, Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared on earth to protect His devotees and to demonstrate His pastimes. Among those pastimes was his childhood role as a cowherd boy. The cows were very dear to Him because of their affectionate and gentle nature as well as their contributions to human society, and He was kind to them in return and protected them. We should follow His example.

In practice the first principle of cow protection, surprisingly, is OX EMPLOYMENT.

There is a mistake made when only the cow is considered, because typically, her main usefulness is seen as milk production, and she will not give milk unless she first has a calf. Half of all calves are bulls who will never produce milk. The expense of feeding the bulls will be a deficit to the farmer unless he realizes their potential for alternative energy by employing them in tilling the fields and hauling.  Otherwise, the farmer, in most countries throughout the world, acquires his economic profit by selling them for meat either directly to the slaughterhouse, the meat industry’s feedlots, or to the veal industry where he lives a short life crammed into a small crate not much bigger than him.

The cow is also sold for meat when she cannot produce the required quantity of milk. Regardless of milk production, the dung and urine of a cow or bull is valuable. Instead of slaughtering all bovines who do not produce milk, why not utilize their dung and urine in fertilizers, compost, pest repellent, medicines, cleaning products, pancagavya, and biogas fuel to name a few useful and saleable items?

“Now, practically, in India they accept it, and it has been found by chemical examination that the cow dung contains all antiseptic properties. That is a fact. One Dr. Goshal, he analyzed in his laboratory, “Why this Vedic injunction is the stool of cow or cow dung is pure?” So he analyzed, and he found it that the stool of cow, cow dung, is full of antiseptic properties.”-Lectures Srimad-Bhägavatam 7.9.10 July 9, 1968 Montreal

The modern system of agriculture does not realize the alternative energy potential of the bull calf nor the variety of useful bovine dung and urine products. Therefore, slaughtering becomes the only economically viable means of management.  Most people, accustomed to this viewpoint and seeing no alternative, will throw up their hands and agree, even if they prefer a less violent solution. This is only because they don't have the facts. They don't know that the overall value of the ox is greater when he is utilized for work than when he's slaughtered for meat, and even when not productive a cow or ox produces useful urine and dung.

The present system is full of ironies and very wasteful. Everyone laments the loss of the small family farm. But economic forces today require quantity control - which is dependent on expensive tractors, polluting fossil fuels, chemical fertilizers, and heavy mortgages - and the small farmer is driven out of business.

Yet, beef production is subsidized in countries like USA and India. To produce beef there is a disproportionate expenditure of the Earth's resources. In a world with increasing population and mass starvation, producing one calorie of flesh (beef, pork, or chicken) requires 11-17 calories of feed. 78 calories of fossil fuel are needed to produce 1 calorie of protein from beef. Two-thirds of Central America's rainforest have been destroyed to supply beef.

A BETTER SYSTEM would be rearranging the components. First, breed cows not to provide milk with calves as the by-product, but to provide a team of oxen for every family farm with milk as the by-product. There will be neither excess milk nor excess calves. The oxen will be out in the pastures eating simply, and naturally fertilizing the soil, saving the farmer the cost of the tractor, fuel, and fertilizer. The oxen will be quite content to use their big muscles in such wholesome work, and the humans can become healthy vegetarians. As for the government, if it wants to subsidize something, why not the small family farm instead of the beef industry? The beef industry may have a powerful lobby, but who wants all that heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, not to mention all that bad karma from killing innocent animals!

Don't we all hanker for a simpler, cleaner, more wholesome, less violent Earth?

THE OX IS THE BACKBONE OF THE FARM,

NOT THE SOUP BONE.

    Hare Krsna Hare Krsna,

    Wonderful discussion article prabhu. Wonderful.

Yes, it is great that you are sharing about these pastimes of Krsna with cows to help us better understand his love for them and divine association with them. Below are some quotes extracted by a devotee who spends a lot of his time looking after cows.

"Krsna said at that time that cows are worshiped even by the demigods, and He practically demonstrated how to protect the cows. At least people who are in Krsna Consciousness should follow in his footsteps and give all protection to the cows. Cows are worshipped not only by demigods. Krsna Himself worshiped the cows on several occasions, especially on the days of Gopastami and Govardhana-puja."

Simply by associating with cows one becomes purified, by serving cows one gets unlimited wealth and by donating cows one is promoted to heavenly planets. Our scriptures clearly stipulate that we have seven mothers and one among them is Go-mata. "Dharma Hamara Kehta hai gaye hamari mata hai". Therefore, it is the duty of each and every one to protect his/her mother. By serving mother Cow all the 330 million demo gods are simultaneously served. Krsna and all other demigods are pleased. Our first prayer to lord Krsna is: "Namo bramanya devaya go bramana hittaya ca jagat hittaya Krsnaya". "I am offering my humble obeisances to you Oh Lord Krsna, the well wisher of cows and Brahmanas and of all living entities." The highest planet is Go-Lok, the planet of cows. Only by the combination of both, the Bramanas and the cow, can the performance of any sacrifice be possible. The bathing ceremony of the Lord of the Lord is done by using Panch-gavya. All the five ingredients of the Panch gavya come from other cow.

"If one saves the life of even one cow, one attains the result of giving 100 cows in charity. The glories of serving the cow are described in the Vishnudharmottara puran: Oh brahmanas, by scratching the body of a cow and by removing the dust and worms from a cow's body one removes all his sinful reactions. One accumulates great piety by feeding a cow. By tending the cows in the field, one becomes eligible to live in heaven for countless years. By building a cow-shed one becomes the king of the whole province. If one delivers a cow from a dangerous situation one attains the result of performing a horse sacrifice. If one treats a cow with sick medicine one can become cured of one's own sickness."

"It is also written in the Ramayana that Lord Rama resides in the heart of those who endure hardship for the sake of cows and brahmanas "vipra dhenu hita sankat sahahi ..... ghar tumhara tinhi kar manu nika".

In the Padma Purana, Lord Brahma said to Narada "First the Vedas appeared from the mouth of the Supreme Lord. The gradually fire, the cow and the brahmanas appeared separately. In order to protect the Universe, I divided the one veda into four long ago. Agni and the brahmanas accept the ingredients for worship on behalf of the demigods. The principal ingredients for sacrifice are produced from the cow. If these four objects had not existed, then the whole world would have been annihilated. Everyone, including the brahmanas, demogods and the demons should worship the cow because she is very liberal and the source of all good qualities."

    Haribol,
