Controlling the mind

Hare Krishna !

The mind is our greatest enemy when it comes to focusing one mind on anything , be it devotion to the lord or implementing the teachings of Gita in our day to day life. Most of the time, I see people discussing negative things which happened in the past or anxities likely to face in the future. What can be done to control this mind & focus on this present ?

  • Practice. We learn how to buy things. We learn how to distract ourself, and we spend many years developing these attributes. At least where I am from, nobody had told me to practice sitting with no distractions. How to be comfortable with silence. And how to apply or bring that silence and the moment with me wherever I went. The amount of time we spent learning other values, it of course takes time and practice to apply and live the other sets of values. :) You can spend a life time learning and applying. Every experience is a chance to practice, and experiences don't end as long as our body is alive. Practice when you work. When you eat. When you eat...just eat, focus on breath or the food. Be there. No  thinking about what you have to do next or what has happened. Silly but profound and simple things are where we can get some of the best practice. I guess for you it may be, while you eat, chant in your head. You know? When we walk, we should just be walking, etc...etc... :)

    • Thanks Adam.....Simple tips but effective I guess..Hare Kriskna !

  • SB 3.25.23 — Engaged constantly in chanting and hearing about Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the sādhus(devotees) do not suffer from material miseries because they are always filled with thoughts of My pastimes and activities.
