It is called shankh mala - have not heard of anyone else cahnting on them, still it should not deter you. Considering we blow the conch before and after each arati, it is considered auspicious. So no issues in the material.
I would keep some kind of backup. If the tulsi beads didnt last in your hands because of over use, I doubt how long shankh mala will last in your hands -it is supposed to be more fragile.
