First of all, I must appreciate Radha mataji's response to this question. I have been following her since a long time. I really appreciate her simply up to the point replies. Thanks mata ji for guiding us all. I want to just add some few more points which sprang up in my head.

yes, certainly the root cause of all sins is the false ego ( that I am this body) and desire. Desire makes one blind. Because of desire ( there are various kinds of desires 5 types basically smell, touch, see, hear, taste) and desire to have name fame etc. And based on these desires one endeavors to satisfy the body ( false ego that he is the body), and mind runs in the direction of senses to satisfy the body. Since time immemorial, we have been doing the same thing and working according to the 3 modes of material nature( lying, stealing, cheating, killing etc.,) just to  satisfy body. creating karma ( good /bad). We were and even now doing result oriented karmas for satisfying body and we got in the karmic bondage in the clutches of karma bandhana. Thus the conditioned soul bond to karma charakvyuha. Is going on doing cyclic pattern of  good karma and bad karma. But the problem with doing Karma kanada is we are getting attached to the work and its results.  One cannot remain without doing any karma ( akarma) it is impossible. Even when u are sitting quietly u are doing sin killing so many microbes while inhaling and exhaling. Some Sins are sins for you, but in the eyes of dharma is not a sin ( Killing of kauravas is a sin in the eyes of arjuna while it is not as per dharma).

But karma has to be done. No one can be free of karma. SO, Lord says in Bhagwat gita. BG 3.9: Work must be done as a yajña (sacrifice) to the Supreme Lord; otherwise, work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties, without being attached to the results, for the satisfaction of God.

Offering all works and its results to lord and doing duty like a sacrifice. ( nishakaam karma yog) is the key. And surrendering to the Lord Sri Krishna completely forgetting the "I" and taking oneself as soul and not the body, considering this soul as a part and parcel of Lord. One can lose this bodily identification , and thus can become sin free and can be free from this karma bandhan cycle of birth and deaths.

    as lord Said..sarva-dharman parityajya
    mam ekam saranam vraja
    aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
    moksayisyami ma sucah

Abandon all varieties of dharmas and simply surrender unto me alone. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions; do not fear.

To basically summarize, Desire is root cause of all sins and also ur sanchita karma , prarabhdha karma and kriyaman karma. Sanchita karma is past karmas in past lives which u accumulated which is cause of this birth in this particular body.( your tendecies , capacities inclinations are all becoz of this accumulated Sanchia karma.

Prarabdha karma is the karma which u are ready to reap now this is also a part of sanchita karma only.  this sometimes is good or bad. according to that u suffer or enjoy do more sins or do more good karmas.

your present karmas Kriyaman /agami karma is also responsible. You have basically your present which u can prevent from doing. So sin doing propensity came within u becoz of past inclinations and also ur desires.  Basically we re in a chakravyuha to come out of this is  not possible, by ur own self!!!!  IT IS POSSIBLE ONLY ONLY  ONLY  by surrendering to Lord Sri Krishna complete SHARANGATI. AND IN KALIYUG CHANTING OF THE HOLY NAME IS ONLY THE WAY TO GET UR SELVES FREE FROM KARMA BANDHANA and THIS ALONE BURNS ALL SINS.

    Hare Krishna.

    • Thanks Mataji for the detailed answer.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

A person commits sin due to false ego - identification with the body. When one is attached to the body, or considers the body to be the self, then any harm (actual or perceived; verbal, mental or physical) to the body will evoke a reaction in one.

Another reason for committing sin is the desire for sense gratification. When one wants to enjoy the body, one tends to commit sin. For example, the next cricket match is about to happen today. So miraculously I will develop headache and fever and take off from school/ work to watch the match. Or desire to eat forbidden food.

Circumstances is nothing but our past karma or it could be unit test given by Maya devi to test the level of evolution of our consciousness. For example, we may thing we are very good devotees, chanting 16, following 4, observing ekadasi, doing bhakti shastri or bhakti vriksha course, so now we can call ourselves devotees. When stuck in a traffic jam or driving, someone does a wrong turn and obstructs our car, then we abuse without any inhibitions. This is the unit test given by nature - to test whether we have really gotten above petty things or we are still bothered about the same petty matters enough to allow them to take our peace away.

It takes a lot of surrender and constant reminding oneself that one is not the body, one is the self only temporarily residing in the body, that these problems are more temporary than the body, no need to get worked up about them and waste precious time, that could be spent in serving Krsna and His devotees. Only then one is able to transcend and be situated in KRsna Consciousness at all times.

Please pray that I attain that stage in this lifetime itself.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

    Radha Rasamayi DD
