I have seen Tulasi mala's with only 54 beads.
I recognized by how short this mala was, and figured 54+54=108.
I purchased this mala because I thought this would be very beneficial to have in places like the workplace where people aren't really favorable to devotional service in the form of japa.
I tend to after finishing 54 beads, turn the mala around and continue until reaching 108. Is this a correct method of performing japa?
Also, I have seen many other mala's like Crystal and Jade (also with 54 beads). The storekeeper told me that those beads are traditionally used by the followers of Lord Buddha. I know Lord Buddha to be an avatar of Sri Visnu. Are these beads also good to have?
Please forgive me if I have caused any offense in asking this question.

Bhakta David

Hare Krishna David Prabhu, please accept my humble obeisances! all glories to Srila Prabhupada!
Better to have one Tulasi Mala with 108 beads and chant our minimum 16 rounds in Them. Then other extra rounds we can do in anything we want.
If we do not do our minimum 16 in our Tulasi beads then there won't be any word of progress in Krishna Consciousness. We will fall.
I saw how some Devotees chant only in counters but it is not true. We should chant our rounds in Tulasi beads with 108 beads. It is not some kind of cheap process, please take it very seriously!!!

Actually Nothing Matter of Beads i.e. 54 or 108, but chanting is must 16 rounds of 108 beads if u chant daily 16 rounds or whatever it should doubled with 54 beads japa mala thatsit. Chanting with japa mala is to Concentrate on Hari Naam with our all of senses like chant with mouth, Hear with ears, and move beads with fingers like that. So that why better way to chant on japa mala and in this matter Krishna likes Tulasi So Chant on tulasi mala is the best for Hare Krishna Mantra Chanting.
