Chanting

My obeisances to all devotees, guru and gauranga.

One has to start with a set number to chant. It could be just one round which hardly takes about 8-10 mins. If one does that for a couple of days, the maha mantra's effects will start to show on the devotee and he/she will start to want to chant more. Srila Prabhupada said that we have to chant all the time, however he said the minimum should be 16 for the initiated and committed devotees. I know a few devotees who are not initiated but chant 16+ rounds.

It comes down to how you want to use your time and mind in Krishna conscious prabhu. Start with one and build up.

I started with one, then went to 3, then 5, then 8 and now 16 and if I have time then I chant couple more rounds. Before I could start chanting I was thinking, I do not have the 2+ hours to finish all 16 rounds and that was like a good excuse for me to not strive towards 16 minimum rounds. But after I started chanting one round for a couple of weeks, I felt so good, so close to krsna that I wanted to increase my rounds. I started to find time to accommodate more rounds and now I have come to 16. Now if I look back, I wonder, on what was I wasting my 2 hours for before? I am not trying to brag about my sadhana prabhu, just wanted to tell people that we have to make our time available to Krsna.

Be sincere and Krsna will see that sincere effort and reciprocate. That is the sign of presence of Krsna in one's life.
