Bothering the Guru

Hare Krishna,  I have heard various things from senior devotees (the only two in my area) about how to handle this situation.  One says that we should feel free and open to ask the guru about any question even if it is about our family life etc... the other says that we should not bother the spiritual master unless we have a specific question about things like sastra or how he wants a specific service done.  Which is more accurate.  I want to contact my guru and ask his advice on some important personal matters but do effect my spiritual life, but i also know he is busy and do not want to bother him or take him away from his service. (i dont have a large number of god brothers and sisters so it is common for him to respond personally within a few days.)  Thank you all for helping me on this etiquette question.

    Hare Krsna Mataji,

    PAMHO.

In our case, we bother the guru for important shastric matters only. At the same time, I have seen people in the congregation here who treat the guru literally like a family priest, asking the guru everything - when son and daughter in law should plan a child, what name to give the child, even to change the name given by guru, whether to marry particular person or not, any and every personal or spiritual matter, however big or small.

Others may think our matter to be petty, butyou have to judge, whether the matter in question is really important to you - and how much your spiritual life depends on it. Ideally ask a senior devotee mataji you can confide in and whose judgement you trust. In case there is no such person, please ask guru. Once you ask guru, you have to follow his instructions, whatever it may be.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,
