My heart goes out to you and your parents. Having said that, it is something that we humans cannot comment on since we do not know what has happened in our previous lives. Raja Dhrishratha by mistake killed 100 kids of a bird some 50 lifetimes ago. The bird gave raja Dhritarashtra a curse that his 100 kids will also get killed. It took raja Dhritarashtra 50 lifetimes to gather the boon of having 100 kids and just to watch them get killed in front of him and he couldn't do anything to save them just because he had to suffer the sin which he had committed 50 lifetimes ago. God is the one who keeps track of all of our karma. So, there is nothing much we can do about it except for just trying, working hard and giving our best. Sometimes things are not in our control even if we do every action in order to avoid any mishappening in our lives.
So my advice to you is not to worry since you can give your best but if things aren't there in our destiny, we might not get them.
