śukla-kṛṣṇe gatī hy ete
jagataḥ śāśvate mate
ekayā yāty anāvṛttim
anyayāvartate punaḥ
Word for word:
śukla — light; kṛṣṇe — and darkness; gatī — ways of passing; hi — certainly; ete — these two; jagataḥ — of the material world; śāśvate — of the Vedas; mate — in the opinion; ekayā — by one; yāti — goes; anāvṛttim — to no return; anyayā — by the other; āvartate — comes back; punaḥ — again.
Translation:
According to Vedic opinion, there are two ways of passing from this world – one in light and one in darkness. When one passes in light, he does not come back; but when one passes in darkness, he returns.
Purport:

The same description of departure and return is quoted by Ācārya Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa from the Chāndogya Upaniṣad (5.10.3–5). Those who are fruitive laborers and philosophical speculators from time immemorial are constantly going and coming. Actually they do not attain ultimate salvation, for they do not surrender to Kṛṣṇa

1. Does it mean that whoever leaves his body in light cannot have birth again, if it is so then so many people are dieing in light(Day time)

  • this have   nothing to do with daylight or night as a part of the day, but with (color of) consciousness.

otherwise everybody who dies during daylight will never return again, which isnt correct.

everything depends of consciousness and state of mind in the moment of death.

as part of the day  , brahma muhurta considers as very auspicious , and also place of death.

but despite that ,for transcendental devotees that is completely irrelevant.

  • Hare Krishna..

Lord was talking about Yogis(who are in the path of devotion). Not about everybody.

Yogi devoted to interested action(performing prescribed duties to gain fruits) is the one who takes the path in darkness, enjoys the fruits of his meritorious deeds in heaven and comes back to this mortal world.

Yogi with disinterested action(Karma Yogi without attachment) is the one who takes the path in light and reaches the supreme state from where there is no return.

    Thanks,

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

Read the whole thing - not one shloka in isolation. It is Krsna Paksha, Shukla Paksa, Uttarayanam or Dakshinayanam... lot of things are there. It is not simply light or dark.

Effectively, it means that if someone dies at such time, its like a green corridor for th soul to travel to the next destination. There are no factors which will stop the soul's progress.

However, these rules do not aply to a devotee.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

    Rashmi
