Are diseases the result of sin?

Is it a sin in hinduism to persue sensory pleasure? Those who are addicted to pleasing their senses (like gluttony, having too much sex etc.) will they suffer the wrath of God,  i.e are there any prescribed punishments mentioned in scriptures for such people, like in Garuda purana or Vishnu Purana?

Are diseases sometimes the result of our sins (over-indulgence in sensory pleasures) ?

There's a friend of mine who was like any other materialistic worldly men. He was addicted to food and women but was not a bad person. Few months back he was admitted in hospital as he was diagnosed with a very bad disease and now even after recovering a bit, he can't enjoy life. Is it bcoz of his wasted lifestyle that he ended up being the observer and can't enjoy life anymore?

Also which souls are reincarnated as trees?  Thanks.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

You are answering your own questions. Doesnt medical science also say over indulgence in food can result in illness, and over indulgence in sex can also result in diseases. When even in the material world we are supposed to exercise caution and do everything in moderation, so as not to affect our health, what to speak of spiritual world and spiritual health.

Yes, according to Sanatan Dharma, human form of life is very precious. It is meant to be used for spiritual progress, not for indulging the senses. The soul has to use the senses to purify its conditioning and embark on the journey back home, back to Godhead, where it originally belongs. If mere enjoyment is one's goal, then there are enough life forms (80 lakhs life forms apart from human forms of 4 lakh species), in which one can enjoy as per one's propensity.

For example, if one wants to eat meat, he will get the body of a carnivore. If one wants unlimited sex, then even a pigeon body will do. Pigeons can have sex 3 times in an hour, more than human capacity. So if that is only the objective, why not pigeon body?

Trees are standing naked out in the open for years and years - so people who are very much into nudity end up being trees.

    • Thanks for your promt answer Radha ji. Yes moderation is very much needed in our lives. People realize this when it's already too late and have damaged their systems. But i was curious if anything is mentioned in any of our scriptures about hedonistic people, like what kind of birth do they get in their next life. Do they end up in the animal kingdom or do they get incarnated as humans but can't enjoy life due to one reason or another.

      Thanks and Hare Krishna.

        Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

        PAMHO.

Please read Bhagavad Gita As It Is. It is clearly mentioned about the 3 modes of material nature - sattva, rajas and tamas. People in the mode of goodness will go to higher planets, in the mode of darkness will go to lower life forms. What is the definition of the 3 modes is also mentioned.

There is no straight answer prabhuji. Karma kanda is complicated. One gets results for so many karmas and combination of karmas that it is not possible to do a one to one correlation that one is suffering such because of such and such karma. Plus karma transcends births - we suffer for previous birth sins and our present birth karma determines next birth happiness and distress.
