Usually a living entity is very much attached to his body. So if his relatives does not do shraddha ceremony accordingly he cannot take a new body so easily.
If one has given birth to nice children and trained them nicely in Krishna Consciousness then they will help him when he leave this world. It says that if in the family lineage one person accepts sannyasa in Krishna Consciousness then hundreds of ancestors will get liberation from hell, or even from the cycle of birth and death.
Because of that it is very important one be a good parent. And bring souls as their children consciously after performing austerities.
