An odd question?

I don't know if I am stupid in asking this but , I am new to Krishna Consciousness.   I work in an elderly assisted living facility.  Tonight we had a patient who was in the last stages of life.  While administering care to the patient I chanted softly the Mahamantra in his ear.  I was hoping that it might help him in his next life.  Is that wrong?   Does it help him at all?  I cared for him as if I were caring for Lord Krsna...  Is this a Krsna service for the dying?  Thanks to anyone who responds.

  • Hare Krishna Thomas Prabhu,

In the holy city of Varanasi in India, it is believed that for all the people who die there, Lord Siva whispers the Taraka Mantra 'RAma..RAma..' in the ears of the dying body, thus leading the soul on the path to liberation. Your service reminds me of the same. In the last stages of a dying person, it is a great service to chant the Mahamantra. After the person's soul leaves the mortal body, we also chant Sri Vishnu Sahasranama to help the departed soul immerse in spiritual vibrations of the glorious names of Krishna-Vishnu. May Krishna bless you with his love and mercy for the service you've performed.

Yes, Prabhuji, it is the top most service to Krishna. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that one is very dear to Me who preaches about the glories of Me to fallen souls and tries to bring them back to Me.

    Krishna is pleased by compassion.

And that person was very fortunate to have You near by!
